The recent reports revealed that activists are protesting an oil and gas firm’s $100,000 donation to a major breast cancer advocacy group.
The activists demand the Susan G. Komen organization to refuse the donation from Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. The check presentation will take place before the Pittsburgh Steelers game. The opponents are planning to rally in a park across Heinz Field.
Dana Dolney, breast cancer survivor and the director of “Friends of the Harmed,” which is a local group that supports people who say they have been harmed by gas drilling. She tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Komen shouldn’t allow companies to use breast cancer publicity to improve their image.
There are “strong opinions” on the issue, but the employees of the oilfield services firm have shown “passion and commitment” to the cause, Komen said.
