A new study states that acupunture won’t make life easier for chronic knee pain sufferers.
Middle aged people with such a malady shouldn’t count on acupuncture to remedy the problem University of Melbourne, Austrialia’s Rana S. Hinman says. Hinman the lead author of the study showed that their experiments showed that real acupuncture with needles and lasers didn’t help anymore than acupuncture for chronic knee pain amongst people 50 plus years old.
In contrast, other studies showed acupuncture highly effective so this research calls for Hinman to defend her results. Hinman stated that their results showed that acupuncture and sham acupuncture saw no improvement in the chronic knee pain. In JAMA the Journal of the American Medical Association that many people turn to alternative medical treatments like acupuncture. Acupuncture however is thousands of years old and has untold millions of people throughout time heralding its benefits.
Hinman and her team had to divide 282 patients all over the age of 50 with chronic knee pain and morning stiffness into four different groups. Osteoarthritis was the common malady amongst the participants. One group received needle acupuncture, another laser acupuncture, one without acupuncture, and one with sham laser acupuncture. Over a period of 3 months the participants received 8 to 12 treatments. Each treatment lasting 20 minutes. After the participants had received their treatments they filled out questionnaires during the course of the treatments and one year later. No significant results of improvement were found so says the study.
The researchers feel that the acupuncture works for those who believe that it will.
The consensus seems to be that the researchers and their colleagues don’t like acupuncture at all. There have been untold studies and experiments that show that acupuncture is effective and some that show it isn’t. The bottom line is more study is going to be needed and opinion tossed out. If pain is alleviated via acupuncture then it works and there are millions of people who will attest to that. Why acupuncture works is still debatable and might be because people believe it will, but if that is true then one can say doing anything will work if the person believes it will and that opens the door to a whole new area of mind over matter self healing which mainstream scientists shy away from anyway.
