Babies sleep safe and well in their own beds.
According to the latest reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies sleep well in the same room with their parents, but without sharing the bed.
More precisely, infants should sleep in their own beds to prevent what is called the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Such incidents occur when babies sleep in the same bed with their parents.
Adults believe their children are better protected during the night, but experts underline that parents can accidentally kill their babies during sleep. Also, other parents do it for comfort because it is easier to feed infants and change their diapers when they wake up.
However, doctors strongly recommend parents to make sure their babies sleep in a bassinet or crib on a flat surface which is not soft to reduce the risks of SIDS as much as possible. According to infant sleep specialist Michelle Rigby, experts haven’t found yet the exact reason why children die of SIDS, but it seems that the risks can be reduced by fifty percent when babies sleep in the same room with their parents without sharing the bed.
Room share is excellent because parents can hear their kids when they wake up, while they can also feed them easily. Based on the safe-sleep guidelines, adults must avoid soft toys, pillows, blankets, and crib bumpers.
For instance, babies can suffocate with their pillows during their sleep, and they can also roll over and suffocate because they are not able to roll back. Moreover, parents should never let their babies sleep on a chair, couch, and any surface from where they can fall. Doctors warn people that although infants are almost immobile, they can still move their arms and legs enough to slip and fall.
To keep their babies warm, parents can use sleeping sacks or warm pajamas. According to the statistics, around 3,500 babies die every year because of SIDS across the United States. That is why AAP experts have been doing their best over the past two decades to raise awareness among people and to make them understand that safe-sleep guidelines are not to be ignored.
Doctors underline that using a crib or a bassinet comes with great benefits for both parents and their children because babies sleep well and safe, whereas parents can monitor them all the time.
