Have you ever felt intimidated by a bald person? Well, as it happens, you’re not the only one. According to a new study from the University of Pennsylvania, bald men are viewed by society as being more confident, dominant, and, overall more masculine than those who kept their hair.
Although most men shun at the thought of someday losing their hair, other simply choose to go with the flow, opting for the Professor Xavier look. For some time now, researchers, especially sociologists, observed that society has some mixed feeling when it comes to bald men. While some people will simply dismiss their looks, and perhaps feel a wave of superiority rushing towards them, others would look upon them with respect.
The team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania started their study from one widely-known fact; bald men seem to be more confident and more dominant that those who kept their hair. To test out this assumption, the team of scientists conducted three survey-based trials.
During each stage, some people were invited to take part in the study. Moreover, each trial had a pre-defined structure – the participants were asked to look at multiple photos depicted bald men and to rate them based on several characteristics such as confidence, masculinity, dominance, and, of course, attractiveness.
As part of the study, the participants also received photos of men who kept their hair and asked to rate them according to the same characteristics used for bald men. The results were more than insightful.
Based on the study’s conclusion, it appears that although bald men are considered less attractive than those with hair, they are viewed by society as exerting more dominance, masculinity, and confidence. Also, it would seem that the team discovered that this perspective is the result of much larger social phenomena.
More specifically, the researcher noted that association between bald men and success is actually a stereotype. For example, bald men are considered to be more successful in life since they have an innate ability to inspire dominance wherever they go.
Furthermore, the researchers have noted that the act of head shaving is also related to this large social phenomenon. While most shudder at the sight of a receding hairline, men who choose to finish the job receive a great boost of confidence.
On this note, the researchers concluded their study by saying that men who are exhibiting the sign of hair loss should definitely think about shaving their heads, as the act itself might bring them a boost of confidence.
