A Southeast Asian tree is the one that has the leaves that produce the drug called kratom which is related to the coffee plant. Experts say that indigenous people and farmers used the plant to relax and to work harder. The kratom is now used in order to relief pain and other people who try to quit alcohol and opioids.
The DEA decided this August that the drug should be listed as a Schedule I among other drugs like LCD. Of course, this decision raised criticism and many people complained about it writing letters and phoning the DEA. Even the lawyers of a kratom vendors group filed a lawsuit in order to stop the drug from being enlisted as a Schedule I drug.
Now that the DEA saw how many people were opposed to the kratom being a Schedule I drug they decided to withdraw their statement and to keep the drug as it is. In order to make sure that they are making the best decision the DEA decides to start a public comment until December so that people could share their experience with kratom as a treatment. The FDA was also put to work and they will start a research about this drug to see how effective it really is and if it is dangerous.
The active ingredient that is found in this drug is mitragynine. The other active ingredient is related to the one found in opioids and this is the one that gives euphoria. The doctors mention that it is not as strong as opioids. Also, it does not have the same side effects.
Despite the fact that it does not have dangerous side effects, the DEA attributed fifteen deaths to this drug in the last 2 years. The problem is that 14 out of 15 people who were found dead had consumed other drugs besides this one.
Many people are now pleased that the drug is not going to be Schedule I and that they have a say in this matter.
If this drug is not going to be enlisted as a Schedule I drug then it will save many people from using opioids which could save more lives.
What is your opinion about this drug? Do you think it is safe?
