This “active living” promoted by big cities makes residents happier.
Despite the fact that we all associate big cities to polluted air, cramped spaces and other problems, these cities are the ones that have more urban parks, cyclists, and joggers. The combination of these factors can make you feel healthier than if you’d lived in a small city.
A new study found that people who live in big cities tend to have better health than those who live in smaller cities. This survey was released by Gallup and Healthways this Tuesday.
The study also found that the infrastructure is the one that influences the people to work out more, to start cycling or jogging or to simply walk more. This “active living” promoted by big cities makes residents happier.
The healthy activities are promoted in bigger cities and more and more people are starting to participate every year. Also, another factor that can influence people to be more active is the fact that the city is so big and they have to walk more or use the bicycle to go to school or work.
Researchers mentioned that even though there are programs that promote healthy activities, more of them should be implemented in time.
Times have changed and now everybody wants to live in a big city because they are influenced by job opportunities that are found only in these types of places. In 2014, more than 50% of people lived in cities. It is estimated that in 2050, almost 70% of them are going to live in cities.
In all of the places that the researchers analyzed, the factor that influenced the most when it comes to active people was infrastructure. This is because if you have a great infrastructure and places for people to do exercises they are going to do it.
The cities that ranked the best in this study were San Francisco, Boston, Washington, New York, and Chicago. The ones that were at the back of the list were Tulsa, Durham, and Indianapolis.
This study was made in order to encourage people to work out more and developers to start investing in the infrastructure if they want their residents to be pleased.
What is your opinion about the study? Do you think that people from big cities are healthier?
