According to the findings of a new study, cannabis may be helpful with the healing process of broken bones and fractures. The recent study was conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Tel Aviv, Israel, and suggests that the lab mice that were exposed to cannabis healed faster after suffering bone fractures.
The component found in cannabis known as cannabinoid cannabidiol, or CBD, helped the mice with the healing process of their broken femora bone.
Dr. Yankel Gabet, a researcher at the university, explained that the CBD helps by making the bones stronger while they are in the healing process. The cannabis compound enhances the “maturation of the collagenous matrix”, which helps with the proper mineralization of the fractured bones. Dr. Gabet said that after they exposed the lab mice to the CB compound, the bones healed faster and became stronger than before.
The new study involved injecting a group of rodents with CBD and the other with a combination of compounds including CBF and THC. After analyzing the data, the researchers found that the rats that were given the CBD compound were more likely to be responsive to the therapy, compared to the group that had been exposed to the combination of the two compounds.
The study revealed that after isolating the THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, which is an important psychoactive compound found in cannabis, the CBD helped by enhancing the healing process of the mice’s broken bones after eight weeks.
The scientists believe this could pave the way for cannabinoid drugs that could help treat serious bone conditions, such as osteoporosis. Gabet said that the human body has a cannabinoid system known to regulate both the vital and the nonvital systems. He added that humans have intrinsic compounds and receptors that the cannabis can activate, which is why we seem to respond to the effects of cannabis.
According to the experts, the human skeleton is regulated by cannabionoids and adding a non-psychogenic compound that doesn’t exist in the brain can have an effect on the skeleton.
This is not the first study that shows the health benefits of cannabis. Previous research has shown that CBD and THC can help fight brain tumors, while marijuana was found to be helpful with treating seizures.
The researchers detailed the findings of the new study in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
