A new study indicated the benefits of a daily consumption of nuts on the brain.
Having some problems remembering where you put the keys or memorizing the list of things you have to buy? One good remedy for these problems is, according to the latest research, a daily consumption of nuts. A new study showed that eating nuts like walnuts, peanuts, and pistachios could improve several brain functions.
The Beneficial Effects of A Daily Consumption of Nuts
Some of the brain functions that showed an improvement after the person tested started consuming nuts on a daily basis were learning, memory, healing, and cognition. A team of researchers from the University of Loma Linda in the United States discovered a link between the daily consumption of nuts and key brain functions.
The researchers observed that there are some types of nuts that improved these functions more so than others. For example, pistachios were the ones that had the biggest effect on information retention, perception, and cognitive processing. These are the ones to generate the most significant gamma wave response.
To demonstrate the effects of nuts on brain functions, the team of researchers selected subjects who ate different types of nuts. The brain wave signals were tested with an EEG test.
Peanuts were noted to be the ones responsible for producing the greatest delta response. This is associated with healing and a healthy immune system. Walnuts have the biggest antioxidant concentration. To study the effects of nuts, the scientists selected six different types and tested their antioxidant levels.
This is not the first study to links a daily consumption of nuts to health benefits. Previous studies have shown that nuts can reduce aging, fight cancer, and protect the heart. One of the researchers involved in the study, Lee Berk, mentioned that they also wanted to see the effects of a daily consumption of nuts on the brain as they still have a limited knowledge on this topic.
