A graphic that claims to show the effects of Coca-Cola on our bodies has gone viral in just a few days after it was released. The infographic is called “What Happens One Hour After Drinking A Can Of Coke” was posted by the Renegade Pharmacist and it shows in details what happens to the human body 10, 20, 40, 45 and 60 minutes after drinking a can of Coke.
The Renegade Pharmacist is the nickname of Niraj Naik, an ex-pharmacist from the United Kingdom. He investigated the effects Coca-Cola has on our bodies right after we drink it.
According to the infographic, in the first ten minutes after drinking the beverage, which contains 10 teaspoons of sugar (100% of the recommended daily intake), our body is able to take is the overwhelming sweetness due to the phosphoric acid that cuts down the flavor, otherwise we would have vomited it out.
Twenty minutes after drinking the can of Coke, the blood sugar goes up, which causes a burst of insulin. The liver responds to this by transforming the sugar into fat. Forty minutes later, the body has absorbed all the caffeine that Coke contains. The pupils start to dilate, the blood pressure begins to rise, and as a response to this the liver delivers more sugar into the bloodstream. Because of this, the brain’s adenosine receptors are blocked, which prevents the feeling of drowsiness.
After forty five minutes, the body increases the production of dopamine, which stimulated the pleasure center in the brain, which is similar to how heroin works, the pharmacist writes in his infographic. Sixty minutes after we drank the Coke, the phosphoric acid binds the calcium, zinc and magnesium into the lower intestine, which provides a boost in the metabolism. The high sugar doses and artificial sweeteners in Coca-Cola compound these minerals, which increases the urinary excretion of calcium.
More than sixty minutes later, the diuretic properties of caffeine come into play and make us want to urinate. This way, the body will eliminate the zinc, magnesium and calcium that were headed for the bones. Also, the body will eliminate any sodium, water and electrolytes through urine.
More than one hour later, the body will start to experience a sugar crash. This may cause us to feel irritated or sluggish in movement. Also, by now we have eliminated all the water that was in the Coke through urine.
Coca-Cola has not made any comments on the infographic yet.
