More and more people are enjoying Nutella as a jam rather than a dessert.
Ferrero Rocher is known for the chocolate delights that it produces. From its luxurious candy wrapped in golden foil to the nutty chocolate spread that has conquered the souls of millions, the company knows how to deal with chocolate. Now, it seems that they are advocating to reclassify Nutella as a jam, not a desert. The reasons are founded, as most Americans prefer to spread it on toast rather than using it as a filling for crunchy pastry.
Currently, the recommended serving size of Nutella is of two tablespoons per day. This translates into 37 grams or roughly 200 calories. Ferrero believes that by classifying Nutella as a jam, and not a desert, thus reducing the recommended serving size, people will be more attracted to the velvety chocolate spread.
This is not the first time when Ferrero has tried to change the label of its famous spread. The company petitioned the FDA numerous times, trying to convince them that Americans are eating Nutella on toast more than they are covering scoops of ice cream with it.
The latest petition mentioned that the nutty chocolate spread should be categorized as a jam because it would be a welcomed, nutritional addition to a balanced breakfast containing dairy products, fruits, and whole grain bread.
The petition was accompanied by a survey. The sample of the study consisted of 722 mothers of children with ages between 3 and 12. The results were consistent with Ferrero’s claims that Nutella is no longer a desert option.
According to the producers, back in 1991, just 8 percent of individuals thought about spreading the chocolate paste on a slice of bread. Now, after fifteen years, over 60 percent of people eat it on toast, 14 percent fill their sandwiches with it, and only 13 percent combine it with fruit or crackers.
The FDA is considering Ferrero’s proposal, but only if Americans back up the company’s claims. Nutella aficionados are being asked to send feedback to the Government and detail their preferences when it comes to consuming Ferrero’s products.
The idea is to create a new category especially for chocolate spreads that will share the technical details of jams, and the taste of dessert.
