Facebook knows how dangerous the internet might be for kids sometimes, so it decided to design a special Messenger app created only for them. The app is called Messenger Kids, and it allows children to chat only with contacts approved beforehand by their parents.
Messenger Kids helps parents better keep an eye on their kids
Facebook is a good way to keep in touch with people, but it might not be suitable for everyone. For instance, children under 13 aren’t allowed to sign up for their own account. However, the company found a way to give parents the chance to chat with their kids anyway, through Messenger Kids. The app is already available for iPhones, and will soon come on Android devices as well.
Although most social media platforms don’t allow children under 13 to create accounts, many of them already use smart devices. Facebook, together with the National Parent Teacher Association in the US, conducted a study in which they interviewed parents regarding their kids’ smartphone use. This is how they found out younger children are already using social media.
The app blocks all content which might contain harmful elements
Therefore, the best decision was to give parents a chance to supervise their children and make their sure they don’t stumble upon unsuitable content. Messenger Kids will display all the contacts previously approved for chat, and a tab showing when they are online.
Messenger Kids contains no ads, and can detect any kind of content which might turn harmful. Therefore, the app is 100 percent child-friendly. By tapping the icon on top of the screen, kids can open the camera which can apply all kinds of nice filters and stickers on their photos.
At the moment, the kid-friendly app can be used only for sending messages and making video calls. However, new content might soon be added. As for parents, they can see their kids’ messages in regular Messenger, without having to download a new app.
