League of Legends [Riot Games] Projected $1 billion by the Year-End

The League of Legends (multiplayer free online game) was launched back in 2009 and has promptly taken hold among the prevalent video games with high user base. As per the official reports, the company had projected $1 billion by year end. The game’s 4th world championship will be held in a soccer stadium in Seoul, South Korea on 19th Oct.

League of Legends is developed by Riot Games, a California based company, following an unusual business model. In the month of January, the company showed off amazing 27 million daily-active players and the 67 million monthly-active players.

Marc Merrill, a Riot Games co-founder and the president stated that, “The League of Legends’ tournaments, plays a vital role to bring in new players and to motivate the existing ones.”

The game is similar to the “Lord of the Rings” and players can purchase “champions” for less than $10. According to SuperData, a market research firm, players spent $122 million in August to buy in-game content. The game has found number of users between the age of 15 to 25.

The fourth worldwide League of Legends’ tournament named as ‘The Summoner’s Cup’ is taking place this month. The grand finale will be on 19th October in South Korea. The interested players should stay updated regarding Kotaku’s League of Legends and highlight Reel tabs on the results. Moreover, the company aims to generate revenue from merchandise in 40 to 50 categories including T-shirts, game characters and many more through an online store.

The game has been played online for over 6-years and the makers have published interactive video animations including a short interview with Cloud 9 (team competing in the quarterfinal). The video captures the movements of 100,000 players in 10,000 games, showing over a 6 years of cumulative player time.
