Lovense users were surprised to discover recordings of themselves during intimate moments. The smart sex toy app captured the moments when the people were using the toy without their knowledge and consent. This seems to be another instance of privacy violation performed with the help of a smartphone.
Lovense recorded its users during intimate moments
Lovense is a smart sex toy which comes with a smartphone app that people can use to control the device. While browsing the media collection on their smartphone, a user discovered a weird recording. This turned out to have been picked up by the sex toy app while the person was using the smart vibrator it controlled.
This isn’t supposed to happen, as the only purpose of the app is to turn the smartphone into a remote control for the device. The app can also control another user’s device, so it might work as a solution for long-distance relationships. However, people are not told that the app can record any sounds while the vibrator is in use.
Smart devices pose a lot of privacy issues
Soon after this was first made public, more users discovered intimate recordings of themselves kept in their media storage. Lovense quickly intervened, and declared a bug was to blame for this unwanted error. Meanwhile, the bug was fixed, and the app should work again as it used to.
Smart devices pose a serious threat to people’s privacy. Nowadays, almost everything is connected to the internet, and the data all these devices use can be leaked any time. Hackers have often stolen private data collected from the apps of such devices, which they either used for malicious purposes or asked for a ransom to return it.
Therefore, people should probably think of relying less on such devices, and finding secure ways to protect their private information when surfing the internet.
