The American Legion approved a resolution for medicinal marijuana.
A group of U.S veterans has a surprising request ; that the government recognizes the importance of medicinal marijuana. They want to make studies in order to find out if the cannabis is an effective treatment for post traumatic stress disorder. Also known as PTSD, the post traumatic stress disorder affects lots of people, including veterans.
This request from the American Legion, the biggest organization of veterans in U.S approved a resolution that calls on the U.S lawmakers to take off marijuana from the list of Schedule I controlled substances.
This comes after the Drug Enforcement Administration declined in August a petition with the same request on the motive that cannabis is not considered a safe medicine yet.
The DEA also mentioned that they will allow more scientists to grow pot for research but nobody has permission to do that now.
Researcher Sue Sisley from the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) gained approval for the first –ever study on how the people with PTSD can be affected by smoking medicinal marijuana.
Sue Sisley attended many of the American Legion Events and now she is supporting their resolution.
“I only heard very positive feedback from the thousands of veterans in the audience,” she told marijuana.com. “I was stunned at how little controversy there was. It seems highly unanimous among American Legion members that we owe it to the veteran community to demand end to the barriers to this kind of cannabis research. In light of the epidemic of veteran suicide, the Legion knows they must strive to uncover new treatments for PTSD/opioid epidemic, etc.”
Sisley also added that the veterans are desperate in trying to find a cure for their problem
If the Congress approves the American Legion resolution it could mean a colossal breakthrough for the marijuana research. This decision could also force the DEA and AFT to reconsider taking marijuana of the Schedule I controlled substances.
Many doctors and researcher think that cannabis does not belong in Schedule I controlled substances such as LSD, heroin and other dangerous drugs. They proved that the medicinal marijuana could relieve the pain of patients in more than two dozen states.
What is your opinion on the medicinal marijuana? Do you think it could help the PTSD patients?
