Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International 2015 lied about her leukemia diagnosis and made thousands of dollars from support campaigns that were meant to raise money for her to pay for her treatment.
The 23-year old woman had quite the elaborate plot, that involved shaving her head several times to look the part and putting her entire family through the ordeal of having a loved one sick with cancer, all so that she could get the money that people donated for her to have a chance to get better.
She allegedly made several members of her family drive her to the hospital and then even wait for her to get her treatment for for six to eight long hours, just in case anything went wrong. During all this time, Ms Weaver-Gates would go to another part of the hospital where her relatives could not see her and then simply come back after her “treatment” would be over.
The announcement regarding her cancer diagnosis was made back in 2013 and since then, various fundraisers have been held for her, so that she would have a chance at getting cured. She eventually earned thousands of dollars from this scheme, and she was very close to actually getting away with it.
However, the police received an anonymous letter informing them about the plan that Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates devised. Since then, they have looked into the matter and discovered the holes in Ms. Weaver-Gates’ story. It seems that she couldn’t even name her doctors and moreover, when the police contacted the medical facilities that she mentioned, it was revealed she was never registered as a patient there and therefore couldn’t have been treated for leukemia.
Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates will have to return her crown and sash as soon as possible, because her Miss Pennsylvania U.S. International will be retracted, as she now represents the exact opposite of everything that her title and the institution that awarded it to her stand for.
Ms. Weaver-Gates remains in police custody at the moment, and her bail was set at $150,000. She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on August 19th, but it is unlikely that she could elude the consequences of her horrible plan. She might be facing jail time for her actions and there is almost no chance that the court will see things in Ms. Weaver-Gates’ favor.
