A federal judge decided that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has not managed to protect the red wolves population. Even though the organization should protect all the animals, fish, and plants, it seems they were not able to do such a good work when it comes to red wolves. In the past two years, the numbers declined from 100 to 45 and it would not be a surprise if they will be gone in a few years because. These individuals are the only red wolf population in the world.
The biggest issue is that not only the agency failed to protect the wolves, but some organizations are accusing them of killing the animals. According to them, the FWS decided to focus on authorizing private landowners to kill the wolves instead of finding solutions to help them survive. Siera Weaver, attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center, said that “Without this court order, there wasn’t going to be any wild population left for the court and the American public to save.”
According to the decision, FWS will not be able to remove red wolves from the properties if they do not prove that the animals are a threat to the humans that live near them. Moreover, the agency promised to focus on increasing the population of red wolves in zoos. They want to the population to get to 400 wolves, which means that even the wild red wolves will have to be moved in zoos.
FWS does not agree with the decision. They think that the captive programs are the only chance for these animals to survive. Moreover, they believe people will be more aware of the important role wolves have in the local habitat when they will visit the zoos. The officials did not talk much about the killings. All they had to say regarding this matter is that lethal means were only used when it was needed.
The judge who studied the case suspects that there will be more evidence regarding this issue. It seems that some groups want to prove that the agency violated the Endangered Species Act.
What we know for sure is that red wolves are in danger. The authorities should find the best solution to help them survive. Killing them will not solve the problem as animals are not aware of human property. It seems that humans are the biggest threat to the endangered species.
