Sony’s division responsible for its PlayStation gaming system has declared that it is forming a new business particularly to build programs for cellular phones. ForwardWorks may be formally integrated on Apr 1, during the same period when the division is said to merge with other businesses devoted to PlayStation’s growth in the global market.
Sony affirmed that it would utilize its current PlayStation games and figures to develop programs for smart gadgets such as smart phones. These titles will be targeted towards iOS and Android customers in different regions of Asia that present interest for the company.
The new divisions will intensely increase the business value by building better commercial opportunities via the ForwardWorks’s activity, as the tech corporation said in its news launch. While the leaders of the game playing industry have long accepted the mobile trend through their portable consoles, they mostly avoided building headlines for mobile gadgets.
However, the market has seen a specific change in this approach, after these days Nintendo released its first cellular game. This is called Miitomo and currently leads the Japanese online stores in its tech category.
Sony has tried its hands at the cellular gaming segment with the PlayStation Mobile, but it later discontinued this project aimed to make a series of titles available on premium Android devices. Even if ForwardWorks’ activity will be restricted only to Asian countries for now, it is a significant change of pace for Sony.
It is also a sign that the increased presence of cellular phones in our life is almost impossible to disregard. This does not indicate that gaming consoles are a dying species, since it s still reported to be sold more than $30 billion worth of consoles worldwide.
This shows us that Sony, like Nintendo, is concentrating particularly on Asian countries with its initial venture into creating phone games. Sony will release “fully-fledged” games, but it did not provide an official schedule for these products.
This strategy is an element of a larger plan developed by the company to draw in more customers across different operating systems into this ecosystem. Therefore, it will offer them more applications and solutions.
As some tech experts have lately mentioned, Japan is no longer important for PlayStation’s business. Japan is nowadays a cellular gaming-first marketplace, its officials said and only a couple of million PlayStation 4 units have been sold in this country, in comparison to over 35 million worldwide.
The Japanese tech producer follows its competitor Nintendo by attempting to move into the cellular game playing industry. Nintendo declared over the past week that its only cellular app, Miitomo, gathered more than a million customers in four days.
The mobile segment is considered a key element in Nintendo’s plan and has represented a major advantage point for the organization over previous years. The company has a collaboration with mobile developer DeNA started in 2014 and together with it, they want to release five smart phone titles before 2017.
