Paris Saint-Germain Outclasses Chelsea with Inspiring Captain at Helm

March 11, 2015 By Jason Leathers Leave a Comment

Paris Saint-Germain Outclasses Chelsea

Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite football competition on Wednesday night, after surpassing Chelsea in a thrilling 120 minutes encounter.

The French team managed to come from behind twice despite playing with one less player after the 31st minute of the match, when striker ZlatanIbrahimovic was eliminated following a controversial referee decision. The night ended on level terms, 2-2, and the result sees PSG going through on virtue of having scored more goals away from home.

Things seemed to be going well for the London side. Having scored once in Paris, Chelsea needed either to win or not receive two goals in order to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. After a hard tackle on Oscar, the referee decided to eliminate PSG star Ibrahimovic from the field, after just a little over thirty minutes of the game had passed. Chelsea players thought it was going to be an easy night from then on.

Ibrahimovic, 33, blamed the opposition for overreacting in hopes of persuading the referee to have him eliminated after his tackle, and replays showed the striker was right in his assumption. Pundits and players alike claimed the Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers didn’t “know what he’s doing,” after refusing to give a penalty-kick for Chelsea this time a few minutes later.

English defender Gary Cahill looked to settle things for Chelsea after scoring with a point blank shot on 81st minute. However, a few minutes before the regular time was about to end, former Chelsea player David Luiz brought the equalizer for PSG with a header after a corner.

The game went into extra-time, and Paris Saint-Germain players thought all was lost when a penalty-kick was awarded after a handball by Thiago Silva. The French team’s captain, Silva disappointed many after jumping recklessly with his hand in the air, giving the ref no choice but to point to the spot. Eden Hazard coolly converted the penalty into a goal.

However, it was a night that offered the Brazilian defender the chance to show people why he is wearing the armband in the French best team. Thiago Silva first tried to make things right in the 114th minute, but a world-class save from Chelsea goalkeeper ThibautCourtois denied him the goal. Silva redeemed himself only seconds later turning the score 2-2.

Many have criticized Chelsea’s coach Jose Mourinho’s cynical approach to the game, and last night proved to be a fruitful episode for those who hate him. Former Liverpool icon Graeme Sounesswas angered by Chelsea players’ reaction to Ibrahimovic’s challenge that saw the Swedish striker sent off.

Fellow Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher blamed Mourinho for encouraging this attitude. Replays showed London side striker Diego Costa pushing an opponent while the ref had his back turned in another attempt to provoke the PSG players into doing something wrong.

“Jose Mourinho could end up being the most successful manager ever but I don’t think him and his teams will be ever be loved because of actions like that. Does Mourinho care? I don’t think he probably cares. I think it’s sad,”Carragher said, labeling the employment of dirty tricks “disgraceful” for football.

The Portuguese manager made no comment on the issue at the press conference after the match. He congratulated PSG players, saying their team deserved the win, and pointed the finger at his men for conceding two goals after two corners, and not being able to control the match. “When a team cannot cope with the pressure of being one player and play at home a team doesn’t deserve to win. I think we couldn’t cope with that pressure,” Mourinho told reporters.

In the other UEFA Champions League encounter Wednesday night, the Germans from Bayern Munich crushed Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk 7-0 to advance to the quarter-finals.

Patriots Part Ways with Vince Wilfork

March 7, 2015 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Patriots Part Ways with Vince Wilfork

After an 11-year tenure with the Patriots, two Super Bowl wins and an unmistakable, almost transcending imprint as the team’scornerstone defenders, defensive tackle Vince WIlfork announced that he and the Patriots had split ways.

Underlining the good relationship that the defensive tackle has with his former team, he explained this surprising break-up by saying that the Patriots had declined his 2015 and 2016 season option considering the 2015 salary cap. The decision had to be announced until Monday, however, with this early announcement, Wilfork is not only eligible for free agency but he can also get a head start on the market.

“I will take my time, think things through, take into consideration many things,[but] regardless remember I will always remain a New Englander, a Patriot forever.”

the tackle said during an interview.

The 33-year-old has plenty of options to consider, especially since, on the market, he’s by far the most accomplished defensive tackle. The 6-foot-2, 325-pound force of nature is a worthy addition to any team’s interior line hole. And while the sheer size may impress, there are other exceptional qualities to this one-of-a-kind athlete: he’s both agile and nimble.“There’s only one Vince Wilfork,” NFL network analyst Willie McGinest said, describing the defensive tackle as not only a great professional but also a dominating player on the field.

Arguably, Wilfork’s break-up with the Patriots was preceded by pay cut suggestions, yet the tackle’s complex contract, which includes incentive clauses and bonuses, surely didn’t allow for serious reworking.

The Patriots are struggling with a 2015 salary cap which they already exceed even with Wilfork’s departure. Either $2.8 million or $8.6 million above the set limit for this year, the team must immediately think of solutions which will make them compliant by Tuesday, 4 PM. One option is to decline Revis’ option for 2015m saving the team a massive $20 million, however they could then re-hire him and still remain within the threshold. And while Wilfork’s release wasn’t unavoidable if the team insisted on keeping Revis, such a transaction could help the Pats retain not only Revis but also McCourty.

Yet one issue does hover over the Patriots this season: after Wilfork’s sparks of out-of-this-world athleticism last season, the team has some freakishly large shoes to fill. And replacing such a key defensive tackle isn’t an easy task. While SealverSiliga and Chris Jones are an option as the team’s top defensive tackles, Dominique Easley might also be an option. And if all else fails, there are some free agency alternatives to consider: Jared Odrick, Dan Williams, Terrance Knighton and Henry Melton are just some of the names that the Pats might consider.

Ryan Mallet to Stay in Texas

March 1, 2015 By Germaine Hicks Leave a Comment

Ryan Mallet

Ryan Mallet tried to stay out of negotiations about his contract, but he did make one thing clear that he wanted to stay in Texas at all costs. Everyone worked together to ensure that happened and it was announced Tuesday that the Texans planned to resign Mallet. Mallet had a desire to stay in Texas and he felt like his performance last season was worth keeping him with the Texans.

During the season, Mallet managed to complete 41 out of 75 attempts even with a torn pectoral muscle. He is currently getting back to a healthy physique that should help him play even better in the upcoming 2015-2016 season. It is likely that Mallet will be joined by another quarterback, Brian Hoyer who is expected to sign with the team as well. Mallet’s goal is to lead the Texans to the playoffs in the upcoming season.

Shocking Trade between Saints and Seahawks

February 9, 2015 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Seahawks-Logo

In an effort to gain a first round pick and get Mike Unger for the New Orleans Saints have decided to trade their tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks. The Saints are struggling with salary caps and are looking for some relief. Currently, they are over by about $16 million. One of the perks of trading Graham is being able to free up some money. The Saints will have to trade off a few more players but are excited to get Unger in return. The Seahawks are $22 million under budget so paying for graham should be no problem.

On the other hand, the Seahawks are looking to add another receiving threat to work with quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks are looking to score a third appearance at the Super bowl. Graham didn’t participate with the Saints during the 2014 offseason. Even while suffering an injury, Graham was able to score 10 touchdowns and rush for 889 yards. Graham had his own controversies with players form the Seahawks in a playoff game. These players will now all be teammates and fans will look to see how well they all mesh together during the upcoming season.

Rams Hoping to Score Nick Foles

Rams

Sam Bradford had a lot of hype his way when he first came to the Rams, but he did not receive the support he needed to move forward. Now, the Rams are looking to trade him for Nick Foles. Both players should find great success with their new moves. The eagles are looking to replace Mark Sanchez and Sam Bradford would be a great replacement. His ability is overwhelming, but his inability to stay healthy is what concerns the Eagles. The Rams believe Nick Foley will offer more versatility and provide the success they may be looking for.

One Game Suspension for Whiteside

January 21, 2015 By Deborah Nielsen Leave a Comment

NBA: Miami Heat at Sacramento Kings

For the second time in several weeks, the Miami Heat Center has been suspended by the NBA. During Monday’s loss to the Celtics, Whiteside decided to strike Kelly Olynyk. It wasn’t the only confrontation the two had during the game. Earlier, Whitehead had initially swung his elbow, but the blow that got him suspended was when Whitehead put a forearm into the back of Olynyk’s neck. He was ejected from the game when the call was upgraded to a Flagrant 2. His teammates condemned his actions on the court and questioned his maturity.

This is the second ejection in 5 games. Afterwards, Whiteside made an apology to everyone. He has recently paid out $40,000 in league fines for his behavior. He will have to get his act together if wants to continue playing for the Heat. Whitehead has been very productive when he plays, which makes a loss of Whitehead very hard on the team.

Reunion in the Works for Andre Johnson and Frank Gore

January 4, 2015 By Germaine Hicks Leave a Comment

Andre Johnson

The Indianapolis Colts seem to be striking up quite a few deals lately. First they manage to grab free agent Frank Gore, and now rumors are abounding that Andre Johnson may be headed that was as well. Gore and Johnson are not strangers. In fact, they happened to be teammates in college at the University of Miami. Both coaches of the Colts are former Miami staff so it is not a strange concept for anyone.

Both players are getting up there in age with both being in their 30’s. They have been very productive during their career and play in positions that the Colts need badly. The players are longtime friends who first met while playing against each other at rival high schools. Fans should be excited to see these two in Indy soon playing alongside each other.
