If you’re still thinking about what to play next, then you might want to head on over to John Romero’s account, because he has quite a treat for all his fans. Doom 2 gets a new map after 21 years since the award-winning first-person shooter was launched.
The 48-year-old veteran game designer has recently announced on his personal account that he designed a whole new level for Doom 2, the progenitor of all modern first-person shooters. If you’re interested in trying out the new level, then you are invited to head on over to Romero’s Dropbox account and download the new map.
According to Romero’s statement, the new level will once again give the nameless marine a chance to demonstrate his skills, by putting him face to face with a new kind of threat.
The new level is called, Tech Gone Bad, and no, it’s not about a computer going berserk, trying to kill everyone in sight. Tech Gone Bad was created using the Doom Builder 2 tools and it was specifically designed to accommodate many players, engaging either in co-op or deathmatch modes.
As to the player behind this new location, it would seem that the intrepid space marine was somehow brought into an underground facility. Trapped behind a massive steel door, the nameless marine will once again have to face waves upon waves of possessed human soldiers, fire-throwing monsters, floating skulls set on fire and many other beasts.
The marine’s goal is to navigate through this new labyrinth and find the portal to Hell. Once there, he must do everything he can in order to seal it for good (how about them apples!).
With this new level, John Romero, considered by many as the father of the modern FPS makes his grand return on the gaming stage. Apart from being the CEO and co-founder on Id Software, the gaming company that released so many great games like the Quake series or Wolfenstein 3D, Romero is also a programmer, developer and a director.
Doom 2 gets a new map after 21 years, and the gamers are wondering what’s Romero’s next move. The game designer did not want to disclose anything else, but it is pretty obvious that the veteran game designer wants back in the game.
For those of you who are unaware or much too young, John Romero along with John Carmack, another programmer and game designer have developed some great programming tools which they used to create their games, thus paving the way for the modern first-person shooter.
