Periscope Has a Long Road to Go in the Live Streaming Industry

March 29, 2016 By Deborah Nielsen Leave a Comment

periscopePeriscope is the biggest company owned by Twitter and among the most popular services in the live streaming segment. As it celebrated its first year this week, the company presented some research that proves how quickly the platform had expanded since its debut in the spring of 2015.

Most significantly, the app’s customers have transmitted more than 200 million live broadcasts via its service. In addition to that, it affirmed that content representing over 100 years of streaming is broadcasted everyday on its cellular apps for the iOS and Android operating systems.

Periscope has certainly advanced a lot since it was released initially, but its amazing figures are still quite behind in comparison to the main video platforms. The service has some road ahead until it achieves 1 million video hours seen every day on its application.

In the meantime, YouTube continues to be the top player in the market and a crowd favorite. The service affirmed that its customers generate hundreds of millions of daily views as they see almost one billion of hours including music video clips, animal videos or funny compilations.

Considering all these elements, Periscope’s popularity in the live streaming segment is still a subject of discussion. This is particularly true after YouTube was said to develop its own competing application, so the Twitter-owned platform will have some difficulties until it reaches the top place.

Periscope has managed to defeat Meerkat, which was the first innovator in the live streaming market. However, the app has a recent opponent to worry about, since Facebook Live joined the broadcasting industry. The service will soon release its live-streaming functions to any Android and iOS device in the United States.

The social network benefits from its over 1 billion monthly members and because it sends live streaming through the user’s notifications. However, Facebook could have some problems attracting people with the recent option, as its representatives affirmed that it would gradually provide customers the option to turn off these notifications.

According to Periscope’s reviews from 2015, its members, who were around 10 million back then, were viewing live shows totaling 40 years. It appears that the platform is using these numbers to boost its confidence and image among potential customers.

It was also unsuccessful to present news regarding the growth of its member base since the previous reports. While Periscope tries to ride the live broadcasting trend, Twitter is trying to bring its micro blogging service back to normal.
