35-Pound Tumor Removed From A Peruvian Woman’s Abdomen

The cancerous tumor started growing when Irianita Rojas Rasma was 8 years old.

The news about the 35-pound tumor removed from a peruvian woman’s abdomen are taking over the internet.

The cancerous tumor started growing when Irianita Rojas Rasma was 8 years old, in her abdomen. After, 14 years later, the 35-pound mass has been removed from the Peruvian woman’s stomach. The tumor grew so large that she looked as if she were pregnant.

The term neoplasm refers to an abnormal growth of tissue caused by the rapid division of cells that have undergone some form of mutation.

The body is made up of trillions of cells that grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. This process is a tightly regulated one that is controlled by the DNA machinery within the cell. When a person is growing up, the cells of the body rapidly divide, but once adulthood is reached, cells generally only divide to replace worn-out, dying cells or to repair injured cells.

Neoplasia describes when these cells proliferate in an abnormal manner that is not coordinated with the surrounding tissue. These rogue cells cannot be controlled in the way that normal cells can because they do not die when they should and they divide more quickly.

As this excessive growth persists, a lump or tumor that has no purpose or function in the body is eventually formed. This is referred to as a neoplasm and it may be non-cancerous (benign), pre-cancerous (pre-malignant) or cancerous (malignant).

Now, it took surgeons at the Archbishop Loayza National Hospital three hours to remove the woman’s tumor in what the hospital described as a ‘medical feat.’ Dr. Luis Garcia Bernal, the hospital director, stated that the patient will stay there for observation.

The isolated Amazonian town, Tamshiyacu, provided little chance of the tumor being removed. Then, Peruvian health minister Anibal Velasquez visited the town, heard Rojas’s story and immediately ordered his staff bring the woman to the capital, Lima, for surgery. Rojas was airlifted to Arzobispo Loayza Hospital, where she underwent the three-hour operation.

Irianita is recovering and can be released, but she will stay in Lima for a few more days to so that we can practice additional exams to define the treatment she should follow when she returns to Loreto.

Garcia Bernal declared on Wednesday.

Rojas lives in Tamshiyacu, a remote town in the Peruvian jungle in the northernmost province of Loreto in the Amazon region bordering Brazil.

She says she had already resigned herself to living with the tumor until a fateful, coincidental meeting with Anibal Velasquez Valdivia, Peru’s health minister. Velasquez was traveling in the region this month to monitor the progress of the construction of a health center in Tamshiyacu when Rojas’ case came to his attention.

Officials say Velasquez immediately gave orders to have Rojas transported to Lima to be treated at Archbishop Loayza National Hospital, which belongs to the Peruvian Health Ministry. Rojas and her mother, Karina Rasma, were flown to the capital on February 16. Medical examinations leading to the surgery began right away.

According to Dr. Garcia Bernal, Rojas has a good outlook. Even though they were dealing with a malignant tumor, he said, it was considered low intensity, meaning no chemotherapy will be needed. Ninety percent of patients with this prognosis recover fully, the doctor said.

Health officials said Rojas’ growing tumor caused her constant pain that prevented a normal life. She had dropped out of school and had difficulty walking and even breathing.

Speaking after the successful surgery, the patient’s mother became emotional, according to a statement issued by the Health Ministry. ‘Thanks for giving my daughter a new life,’ Rasma told the doctors.

Miracles Do Happen: The Story Of Dominique Smith’s Heart

February 5, 2016 By Deborah Nielsen Leave a Comment

Nikki Smith.

Dominique ‘Nikki’ Smith

One could say that miracles do happen: the story of Dominique Smith’s heart is the proof of that. When 49-year-old Vicki Olds’ daughter, Domonique ‘Nikki’ Smith, unexpectedly died at age 18 in June 2015, the grieving mother immediately offered to donate Nikki’s heart to her friend, Tanisha Basham.

Domonique ‘Nikki’ Smith, a 18-year-old, Valparaiso University student from Lakes of the Four Seasons, was pronounced dead in june 2015, after being found drowned. After investigating the case, the police declared in a statement, that the unexpected drowning was an accident. The girl was only 18 years old when she died.

As the grieving mother, Vicki Olds, said goodbye to her daughter, she learned that a longtime friend had a younger sister, called Tanisha Basham, who needed a heart transplant. Tanisha Bahsam had been on a waiting list for a new heart, because she had congestive heart failure, for 18 months. So the only thing grieving mother, Vicki Olds, thought to do, was donate her daughter’s heart to Bahsam.

Tanisha initially declined this selfless gift. But Vicki insisted. Afterwards, Tanisha underwent a successful heart transplant surgery at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. What’s even more amazing is that the heart was a 100 percent match.

Dr. Antone Tatooles of Advocate Heart Institute at Christ Medical Center, said in a press release that he’s never witnessed a heart organ donation with such clear direction.

Fortunately, the match was proper, the size was proper, and it was the right heart for her.

he declared, in the same press release. Tatooles added that Olds’ donation was ‘incredibly generous’ in helping save Basham’s life.

Vicki and Tanisha shared their emotional story at a news conference Tuesday.

To know that, this is my baby who lives inside Tanisha, it was the most overwhelming thing a parent could ever experience, but yet it was a blessing.

Vicki said.

According to ABC News, Basham honors Nikki by keeping a photo as a screensaver on her phone to remind her of the good fortune of Old’s generosity.

The medical center also added that when Tanisha Basham goes to her frequent echocardiogram appointments, Vicki accompanies her ‘so she can see her daughter’s heart beating in the body of her friend.’

According to the same medical center, Smith’s donated organs saved the lives of four other individuals, including another family friend who received a kidney.

"Conjoined Twin Was Discharged From the Hospital "

The Brantley twins were conjoined along the abdomen, had fused livers and they also shared a common small intestine.

A family from Florida was overjoyed to hear that they can take one of their children home. The conjoined twin was discharged from the hospital, after undergoing multiple surgeries and spending 13 months in the hospital.

In 2014, Michelle Brantley gave birth to Connor and Carter in December. Unfortunately, Connor was born conjoined with his brother Carter. According to the doctors in charge of the case, the two baby boys were conjoined along the abdomen line. Moreover, the boys shared a common small intestine and their livers were also fused.

In order to survive, the conjoined twins had to go through multiple surgeries. The lengthiest was took nearly 12 hours, but the doctors managed to separate the two brothers.

After spending more than a year in the Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Connor was discharged by his attending physicians. The doctors gave the news to the family and it would seem that Bryan Mirabal, the father of Connor and Carter, is anxious to start his full-time job as a father.

In a press conference, Bryan declared that he couldn’t wait to bring his son home because he has many things to teach him. It would seem that Connor will start learning about cars and dogs sooner than he may realize.

Meanwhile, Michelle Brantley, Bryan’s wife and the mother of the formerly conjoined twins declared that while Connor is free to leave the hospital, the doctors have decided to keep his brother Carter for further observation and treatments.

Connor, the formerly conjoined twin was discharged from the hospital after spending all of his life in the hospital. Moreover, it would seem that he and his brother were consulted and care for by more than 200 medical specialists, including pediatricians, surgeons, and nurses.

Furthermore, this is the first time after the separation that Connor had to leave Carter’s side. On Wednesday, in the same press interview, their mother also declared that before being taken home, Connor got to see his brother one last time.

When seeing his brother, Carter started to cry, but his brother kept smiling back at him. All, this time, they were holding hands as if it was a natural thing. Brantley, the mother of the twins declared that they cannot yet fathom that the two children cannot yet fathom the concept of brotherhood, but deep inside they know that there is a strong connection between them.

Daniel Robie, the head of pediatric surgery at the hospital was there from the beginning. The doctor also said that it is hard for him to see Connor living after spending more than a year caring for the twins. But he also told the reporters that they have another path to follow.

Expectant Mom of Quadruplet Endures Emergency Surgery to Keep All Babies Alive

October 25, 2014 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

Ashley-Undergoes-Emergency-Surgery-to-keep-quadruplet-alive

An Utah’s expectant mother, who is expecting quadruplets, endures an emergency treatment this week on one set of her twins in order to keep all four babies alive.

Earlier this week, Ashley Gardner, with 19 weeks old pregnancy of her quadruplets went to the doctor where she found that one set of twins was suffering from twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a rare disorder that occurs when there was an uneven distribution of blood supply between the twins in the shared placenta.

Ashley and her husband, Tyson, flew to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in California on Tuesday for the surgery.

Doctors successfully performed the treatment the following day and were able to equally distribute blood between one pair of the twins.

Doctors also performed a cervical cerclage to prevent Ashley’s cervix from opening further, the family said.

Ashley’s pregnancy has been chronicled on their Facebook page, as well as a YouTube channel. The recent update on her Facebook page exposed an ultrasound showing all four babies survived the surgery.

Ashley went back to Utah on Friday and the doctors recommended a strict bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy.

The story of the couple first went live on the social media when they found that they were expecting quadruplets.

The Ashley’s tried vitro fertilization way back in June as she had been struggling to conceive for 8 years. She was suffering from endometriosis, a disorder that may develop fertility problems.

This month, a seven-week ultrasound of Ashley revealed that she is expecting quadruplets – two sets of identical twins. It is a very rare to have two sets of identical twins. It happens once out of every 70 million pregnancies.

The news goes viral over the Internet and soon after, the couple revealed that they heard all four babies are girls.

Angelina Jolie Brought High Spirits For Breast Cancer Screening

September 20, 2014 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

angelina-jolie

Angelina Jolie, the glamorous queen of Hollywood had undergone double mastectomy in May last year. Reports suggested that by announcing her surgery publically, Angelia Jolie has inspired a number of female fans.  Jolie, who is 39 had her both breasts removed in 2013 after her tests showed positive results for BRCA1 mutation. The mutation is a high risk factor for developing breast cancer in later life. Since then women are following Angelina’s steps by going for genetic screening for BRCA1 mutation in masses.
According to a research analysis done this Friday, Angelina Jolie’s attempt to get her breasts removed had convinced women of Britain more than double to go for a breast cancer test. The actress thought that by announcing her surgery she could help women fight the disease and could also bring awareness among women regarding incidence of breast cancer; and at some point she perceived rightly.
The research that was conducted this week covered 21 clinics and local genetic centres. The results depicted a total of 4,847 people showing up for tests in the month of June and July last year as compared to 1,981 referrals during the same period in 2012. The conclusion of the study that can be labelled “Angelina Jolie effect” apparently gained much popularity in 2013. Also, Angelia Jolie’s public appearance after her surgery and Brad Pitt’s full support is an optimistic hint for women undergoing this surgery.
