AT&T opts out of Smart Phone Tracking Cookie While Verizon Continues

November 17, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

In late October, researchers discovered that AT&T and Verizon had been engaging in some unsavory customer tracking methods, using unique identifying numbers or “perma-cookies” to track the websites that customers visited on their cellular devices to deliver target advertisements.

But AT&T in a bold move announced to cease the operation of tracking its customers. AT&T had implemented a program in all its customer smart phones which would track their activity on a day to day basis using the perma cookies and send the activity information to AT&T. AT&T may still implement a program to sell this data activity to 3rd party customers who would then use it for advertising purpose. However, Verizon will continue to track and monitor its customer’s activity.

AT&T’s customer tracking practices, called “Relevant Advertising,” were the result of a pilot program the company had been experimenting with, which has apparently come to an end. While AT&T has opted to stop using the invasive tracking method, Verizon is continuing to utilize perma-cookies to track the web activity of its customers. Unlike AT&T’s experimental program, Verizon has been using Relevant Advertising techniques for approximately two years.

Verizon and AT&T customers are able to check whether their devices are sending identifying codes by visiting a website created by Kenneth White, one of the security researchers who discovered the tracking methods. While Verizon customers can opt out of tracking on the Verizon website, that does not stop the identifying code from being inserted into the URLs of the websites that they visit.

FCC Asked AT&T To Clear Its Stance Over Net Neutrality Despairs

November 15, 2014 By Jason Leathers 1 Comment

net-neutrality-graphicsbank-FCC

According to the recent reports revealed, US regulator, FCC (Federal Communications Commission) has requested AT&T (2nd biggest cellular provider of the country) to describe their stance on why they’ll be stalling the rollout of the expansion plan of fiber-optic for high-speed Internet.

Randall Stephenson, the chief executive of AT&T stated earlier this week that his company is holding several investment plans countrywide, mainly the fiber upgrade plan, until the issues concerning internet neutrality aren’t resolved by the government at its earliest.

While talking over the problem in an investor conference on Wednesday, Stephenson stated, “It’s cautious to pause. We want to make certain we’ve line of sight about this process where these rules could land, and then re-evaluate.”

The Stephenson’s remarks showed up on Wednesday, i.e. just 2 days, after American President Obama supported the proposal of getting broadband service companies under Title II of the Telecommunications Act. This could have enforced the FCC with increased control to manage internet service providers because it would do with the general public utility firms.

The remarks of the Stephenson’s also signify the very first business move taken by internet service provider in reaction to the Obama’s unpredicted proposal towards the Federal Communications Commission.

Obama’s proposal towards the FCC fetched a wave of response from the broadband companies, for example AT&T, Verizon and Comcast, who cautioned the more stringent regulation may restrain their investment plans. The customer advocacy groups welcomed the proposal by Obama, saying this could only be sure that the reason for Internet neutrality is served, i.e. all internet traffic is treated uniformly.

The Federal Communications Commission has sent instructions, that was signed by Jamillia Ferris, to AT&T as a result of the thought of their intends to halt the fiber optic expansion.

Within the instructions letter, the government regulator has searched for the particulars and documentation on which projects are going to be stopped.

Additionally, the FCC has requested whether AT&T’s investment model implies that the fiber network deployment is unprofitable or maybe the firm is planning it to turn unprofitable after purchasing DirecTV.

Google’s Nexus 6 — Quite Expensive From What The Nexus Line Used To Be!

November 14, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Google's-Nexus-6

The Nexus 6, Google’s latest smart phone, is going to be launched Thursday, but pre-orders begin today.

The Nexus 6 carries a screen that measures 6 inches diagonally and it is certainly a “phablet” with that fact alone. Its dimensions go beyond Samsung’s latest Universe Note 4 at 5.7 inches and also the Apple iPhone 6 Plus at 5.5 inches.

The Google’s Nexus 6 price begins at $649 for 32 GB models and it goes up to $699 for 64 GB models, in addition to the shipping cost. It is available in two colors: mid-night blue and cloud white.

The price tag seems to be a major departure from what the Nexus line used to be: a patchy budget option. The prior Nexus 5 smart phone priced for $350 with the screen size of 4.95 inches.

However, the smart phone still keeps a couple of stuff that noticeably turns it into a Nexus phone.

Similar to its forerunners, the smart phone can come unlocked and used on the United States and global carriers, and should work with the large four service providers such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile within the U.S.

Also akin to its forerunners, it runs an unmodified form of the most recent Android update, Lollipop, that customers will have the ability to receive over-the-air updates from Google, which energize customers tout as a strategy to Android’s oft-reported fragmentation problem.

When it comes to the Nexus 6 battery, it is unremovable. However, the storage is unexpandable, and the back side of the phone features its signature Nexus branding. Though, this time around it is also sporting a Motorola logo design together with a camera within the center, making the phone’s form factor and finishes conspicuously like the Moto X.

But you can’t say that all of the phone is derivative. Google is adding numerous features in the phone. With the new purchases, you’ll get the six months free subscription of Google Play Music unlimited, Google’s music streaming service. Battery also offers a greater ability to take into account for the bigger size. In contrast to 3,220 mAh to the Nexus 5’s 2,300 mAh, the larger battery provides the phone a purported all-day battery life.

The Nexus 6 smart phone also has a Motorola Turbo Charger that Google claims give the phone battery life of 6 hours with just 15 minutes of charging.

The Nexus 6 comes up with the 13 megapixels rear camera along with the 2 megapixel front camera, which appears to be an explicit improvement as compared to the Nexus 5’s 8 megapixels. . Though, the bigger sensor may compensate for a few of the Nexus line’s perennial camera quality problems, it probably won’t endure the standard that Samsung’s Universe S5 or Apple iPhone 6 can output.

However, it’s yet unclear whether Google continuously upsize its flagship model in riposte to a global market that’s progressively for bigger phones, but if Apple iPhone 6 Plus and Nexus 6 have any suggestion, flagship phones are rapidly moving into phablet territory.

Motorola’s new Flagship Droid Turbo offers battery life up to two days

November 2, 2014 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

motorola-turbo-battery-life-2-days

Smartphone manufacturer Motorola has finally launched its flagship model, “Motorola Droid Turbo” which the recently Lenovo bought vendor claims to have the longest battery life worth of two days.

The latest handset range was announced jointly by Motorola and Verizon earlier this week. For now the 32 GB handset is only available for Verizon customers starting at a price tag of only USD 199.

The set has been hailed by Motorola as its headliner handset which is on the same mould as flagship is.

The most noteworthy thing about the Droid Turbo is its battery life which the company has been bragging about for quite some time now and it does come with a 3,900 mAh battery which could last for up to two days, so Motorola might have done something substantiating here. The handset is also equipped with a superior 21 MP rear camera. The system on chip (SOC) housed is the new 64 bit Snapdragon 805. This device also boasts a Quad HD AMOLED display at 1440p. According to the company, the metal glass fiber body of the new Motorola Droid Turbo handset makes it stronger to survive any drop than any other available handsets in the similar price range.

AT&T Locked Universal SIM card of iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2

October 25, 2014 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

AT&T locks SIM card

The biggest improvement in the latest range of iPads is the incorporation of universal SIM. Apple claimed that this universal SIM card will allow users to effortlessly  swap the networks.

It will save the customers from the hassle of changing the SIM cards. Users can easily avail this service with just a tap on their iPads.

Moreover, the biggest tech giant informed that all the major carriers of the United States such as T-Mobile, Sprint  signed an agreement specifically for this purpose.

Recently, AT&T announced that  it would not unlock the SIM cards of the brand new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3.

Moreover, the carriers informed that this new service is now merely valid for the people who bought iPad soon after its launch.  The owners of those iPad can take the advantage of that new service

Unfortunately, T-Mobile also declared that customers need to remove a plastic case present in the iPad in order to change the SIM. The process is also applicable on all the new and old iPads purchased from the stores of T-Mobile.

It seems like Apple intended to make everything easier and time saving for its customers. However, the carriers wish to put some limitations and restrictions on the consumers.

Even before this announcement customers voiced out their complaints on different social networking sites and Apple Support Form. The buyers reported that SIM is still lockdown on their new iPads.

Although AT&T lockdown their SIMS but still other carriers states  even then it is a trouble free task to switch the SIM.
