Not to be outdone by Snapchat and Whatsapp, Skype has now come out with their own photo and video sharing app and it’s called Qik.

Qik was developed by Skype’s engineers and users share short videos and pictures. You can use them as one-off messages or as part of your regular Skype conversations. The app is ready for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Each platform has its own features and some might not be available for all of them. You can get your Qik app today.

The app only stores videos for 2 weeks which makes it easy for Windows Phone and Android users to delete their messages from the chat even when it has been viewed. The capability to block contacts with Android and Windows Phone isn’t available on iPhone but will be there months from now. Another feature is ‘Qik Fliks’ a five second GIFs that are sent on the spot or saved. So far only iOS and Android users can access Fliks while Windows Phone users will have to wait a few months.

After downloading the app, you can start sending vids with anyone who is in your contact list. They’ll get a prompt to have them download the app too in order to participate. Thanks to Skype’s acquisition of Qik, the real time video broadcasting service, Skype’s engineers went to work on how to incorporate the technology and make it work.

Skype says that user feedback is essential to the future success of this marriage of technologies. This can be a major game changer for Skype and Microsoft. With the popularity of such imaging apps like Snapchat and Whatsapp, it could overrun them especially with the recent scandal where Snapchat’s security over younger users’ pictures getting hacked and leaked. Parents and kids might be amiss to use Snapchat again and that clientele could easily drift toward Skype and Microsoft that still hold some sway regarding security and respectability.
