Released amongst a bunch of other Apple products including the iOS 8.1, Apple Pay and iPads, Apple also released the new iMac 5k display.
This display is not 4k that you’ll find just now being introduced to the public as television screens and displays but this is 5k and boasts a resolution of 5120×2880/218ppi. The 4k versions already have a resolution of 4096×2160.
One might think resolution can’t get any sharper than what’s out on the market so far, yet companies keep on developing sharper picture quality to the point of disbelief.
Gamers and video and photo editors will drool at the resolution as their interests call for bigger and better graphics and being on top of the latest technology is paramount to them. The specs on the iMac 5k are astonishing. It costs a lot too coming in at around $4,500. It’s said that Dell is coming out with their own 5k display around time for the holidays. Their version will be considerably cheaper.
The bottom line here is how bad does one want 5k resolution? Certainly gamers who want the more realistic graphics so they can slip away into their imaginary worlds. The developers of games will want the displays too so that they can see what their work looks like. Video editors will need it to be ahead of the pack and see how their movies, commercials, television shows look. This is important for the set designers and makeup crews. Today’s resolutions are so crisp and clear that the slightest blemish will be revealed.
Sports fans will want the 5k to see their favorite games. Even though 4k sets are just now coming out as soon as some people hear a bigger and better set is available they’ll have to have it.
Apple isn’t jumping the gun here but hedging their bets that people who have the means will buy up the 5k displays as fast as possible thus creating a vacuum so that they can then issue a new version. Getting that reputation as ‘the’ 5k display is going to mean a lot to Apple and at least they’re off to a good start.
