According to the Pan American Health Organization, the risk of contacting the Zika virus is rapidly decreasing in Mexico and many other areas of South America. At the same time, Florida had declared the Little River neighborhood in Miami free of Zika.
Rick Scott, the Florida Governor made the official announcement on December 2nc, 2016. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention also supports his statement. Shortly after the announcement, Miami became once again a tourist attraction for visitors from all over the country. However, Governor Rick Scott promotes precaution and urges the citizens to keep wearing bug spray in order to maintain a Zika free environment especially for pregnant mothers.
At the same time, the red code has been downgraded by the CDC to yellow. However, Miami is not yet free of Zika transmission, as the southern beaches still represent active zones of Zika infestation. Since the first case that occurred earlier this year, more specifically in August, the disease has been reported to spread to 244 other Miami residents.
The Pan American Health Organization has also reported that the number of individuals diagnosed with the Zika virus is rapidly decreasing in Mexico, as well as in other regions of the Americas. The last update on Zika took place on November 17th, 2016. Since then, the America Health Organization has not only reported a decrease in the affected individuals, but also they have publicly announced that the disease did not spread to new regions.
The Miami-Dade County investigators are currently working on pinpointing the exact locations where patients have been exposed to the virus. As of now, most of the Central America countries have reported a decrease in the affected population. However, Panama, as well as other South America regions, such as Peru and Saint Barthelemy still experience an increase in the Zika-infected population.
Moreover, the biopharmaceutical company, Inovio has received on December 2nd a $6 million award for developing the highly efficient Zika treatment. The main thing that sets this particular vaccine apart from all others is its ability to prevent the illness immediately after exposure to the Zika virus. However, it does not provide the patient with a long-term immunity.
Nevertheless, the company is currently developing a new batch of vaccines that will be used to treat the outbreak in Puerto Rico. The scientists estimate that almost 25 percent of the Puerto Rico population has been exposed to the virus.
