According to the recent study, there is an indication that the marine animal growth is shrinking along with the reproduction of increased changeability across stronger coastal upwelling currents. The study revealed that these currents actually help to provide nutrients to various important ecological units.
The western coastal winds across the Pacific coast of northern America usually drag nutrient affluent water from the deep ocean towards the shallow water which eventually enables blooming of phytoplankton. The study conducted at the University of Texas, Austin stated that, it is believed to be the vital source of food for coastal birds and animals.
The results of the study further indicates that from the past 60 years, Pacific coastal region has weathered winters with curiously low rates of upwelling which resulted in the slower growth of the fish in that particular area along with the lesser local birds reproduction rates.
Bryan Black, assistant professor of marine science and the study’s lead author stated that, “according to the results of our study, California seems to be the major region for increased coastal upwelling variability.” He further stated that, “You need to keep in mind especially if you are dealing with the fishery, you can’t even expect that every year would stay moderate or reliable. There come lots of ups and downs.”
However, in order to discriminate this, we examined around 600 years worth of tree ring growth from blue-oak trees located in the area. We have chosen these trees just because of the fact that they are very responsive to climate shifts connected to upwelling.
We compared the statistics from the rings of blue-oak trees along with several other biological factors concluded that the poor upwelling is the major cause of decrease in biological productivity, scientists says. The scientists stated that they are not sure, though, if this is just a causation or a coincident.
“This seems to be steady with what we suppose from the climate change, however at some point, we cannot connect it to that. I think this is the thing we need to continuously observe that how climate changeability play a significant role over the period of coming years,” Black stated.
