According to Consumer Reports’ annual report on America’s most beloved supermarkets, Wegmans remains on the top of the list as many shoppers lauded it for its customer service, cleanliness, and the variety of its fresh foods.
The chain, which has 85 stores on the East Coast, was also praised by Consumer Reports’ board members for the freshness of its produce from bakery items and cooked food to meat and vegetables.
Danny Wegman, the company’s chief executive, thanked employees for making it happen.
“A big thank you goes to our employees. Results like these are only possible because of our people and because we are paying attention to the things that matter most to our customers,”
Mr. Wegman said after he learned about the achievement.
Also, business management experts believe that Wegmans “come closest to perfection” due to their deals, exemplary customer service, exceptional store brands, and “out-of-this-world perishables.” And to top that, the chain store really knows how to treat its customers.
But not only customers are happy at Wegmans, its workers are too. Although it is a relatively small company, it does do a great job when taking care of its employees. Only recently, Wegmans took Amazon’s leading position on the list featuring the U.S. companies with the best reputation.
Wegmans employees have a lot of benefits such as school scholarships, bonuses, and promotions based on their performance. About 66 percent of Wegmans promotions are internal. So, people don’t feel stuck in their jobs as they do with other companies.
Moreover, workers are encouraged to have a certain ownership over their work and are granted an amount of freedom to innovate. They also receive constant training so they feel valued. And that goes also for Google and Costco. So, no wonder the three are listed as the most craved companies to work for.
And it seems that investing in people does pay off. They feel more motivated, they look happy, and the customers can see they are happy. So, the business thrives.
Consumer Reports’ ranking list is based on an annual survey which involved about 63,000 reader feedbacks to 68 retail chains. Wegmans earned the top spot last year, too.
This year, Publix and Trader Joe followed Wegmans in overall score but they had gaps in produce freshness. Whole Foods and The Fresh Market were ranked as the chains with the freshest products on sale.
Whole Foods is also known for treating its employees better due to its benefits programs that apply also to part-time workers and productivity rewards. Costco’s employees earn about 40 percent more than their peers working for competition, while Trader Joe’s workers can earn twice the salary in other stores with a starting annual pay ranging from $40,000 to $60,000.
Costco earned the sixth place on overall score, while Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target, and BJ’s were in the bottom half of the list. While Wegmans scored 90 out of 100, Walmart hit only 64.
On the other hand that is no surprise for Walmart which was repeatedly criticized by labor unions for the meager pay it offers. But after several strikes, Walmart, as well as Target, eventually chose to increase the hourly wage.
