Ava DuVernay to Direct DC’s New Gods Adaptation

March 16, 2018 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

It was officially announced that Ava DuVernay would be directing DC’s New Gods.

It has recently been officially announced that director Ava DuVernay is going to helm DC’s upcoming adaptation of New Gods. But if you are not a big fan of DC’s comic books, you may not know exactly who these guys are.

Well, if most superhero stories take place in contemporary mythology, in this case, things are entirely different. It all began in the 1970s when Jack Kirby left Marvel and went on to create something new at DC, the rival company. It’s all part of the Fourth World Saga, which in the beginning ran on four separate comic book series.

There are many characters in this series, and it would be challenging to introduce them all in a new movie, as Warner Bros is reportedly planning to do. However, people should know that this story and characters are unlike everything they’ve seen so far.

Orion is the man character of the series, and he is the son of villain Darkseid. Highfather, his opposite number raised him, on the planet called New Genesis. Over the course of the series, Orion can be seen struggling to maintain a balance between the beast inside and the love he has for the ones who raised him with love.

Who are the New Gods? A Short Introduction

Lightray is Orion’s best friend who keeps him from becoming too dark. He would even fight his best friend to protect him. Lightray is a carefree soul who doesn’t possess too many internal struggles, unlike Orion.

Another important character is Highfather, the father figure of the series. His real name is Izaya the Inheritor, Darkseid’s opposite number. New Genesis and Apokolips, Darkseid’s planet, started a war when Darkseid murdered Highfather’s wife.

As for Darkseid, he acted as an inspiration for both Marvel’s Thanos and Star Wars’ Darth Vader. Other interesting and important characters in this universe are Granny Goodness, Metron, and Big Barda. Time will tell if Ava DuVernay will successfully adapt these fascinating character to fit the big screen.

Is DaVinci’s Record Breaking Painting Authentic?

November 20, 2017 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi just became the highest art acquisition in history.

The most expensive art sale in history occurred last Wednesday, November 15, 2017, when a painting attributed to the Italian master, Leonardo DaVinci, sold for $400 million at auction. However, some are questioning if this record breaking painting is DaVinci’s actual work.

The Salvador Mundi and the Cause of Intrigue

The painting, the “Salvator Mundi” (“Savior of the World”) depicts Jesus Christ holding an orb, which represents the Eart in one hand while gesturing at viewers with the other. This would be a pretty standard image for a Renaissance painter to depict, which may be why some are questioning if the esteemed Leonardo DaVinci actually made it.

“I think it’s exceptionally boring, and when you see it hanging next to some real Leonardos, it doesn’t look good,” Professor Charles Hope said bluntly, adding that he finds it “ridiculous” that anyone believes it to be legitimate.

“The world is filled with near-Leonardos,” he said.

He is not the first to express this opinion. Dr. Carmen Bambach, an Italian Renaissance expert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was the first to make the claim. She hypothesizes that passages of the record breaking painting were by made Leonardo, but that it was mostly the work of his colleague, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio. Another famous painting, the “Madonna Litta,” is sometimes debated between the two.

However, the “old masters” experts by and large agree that this is a DaVinci work. Charles Beddington, a British art dealer, criticized those who have been claiming otherwise despite not being experts on the topic. He does concede, however, that “Salvator Mundi” requires some restoration to look as good as it did in Leonardo’s days.

Whoever may have made it, the “Salvator Mundi” just made art history as it is the most expensive art acquisition ever, beating out Willem de Kooning’s “Interchange,” which sold for $300 million.

Also, if this painting is a Leonardo, it’s one of only about twenty held by private collectors.

Stephen Hawking Makes Gloomy Prediction For Earth In A 100 Years

May 7, 2017 By Deborah Nielsen Leave a Comment

stephen hawking

Stephen Hawking warned that humanity might face extinction within 100 years.

Stephen Hawking, the renowned physicist, has warned that humans must develop the means to travel to other planets or face extinction within 100 years. According to him, human extinction could be caused by climate change, epidemics, overpopulation and/or asteroid strikes.

Stephen Hawking Warns That Humans Need to Colonize Other Planets or Go Extinct in 100 Years

Hawking has issued his warning in “Expedition to New Earth”. This is an upcoming documentary that will be shown this summer as part of “Tomorrow’s World” the BBC’s returning science series. Other episodes will cover topics such as robotics, aging, and 3-D printing.

During “Expedition,” Hawking, along with his former student Christophe Galfard and an engineering expert, Professor Danielle George, will discuss the possibility of traveling to other planets. They will explore the advances in rocket science, biology, and astronomy that could make colonizing other planets feasible.

Stephen Hawking has often called for humans to colonize other planets as an insurance policy against a planetary disaster. In 2008, during a commemoration of NASA’s 50th anniversary, he said that the moon might be a potential base for space travel. From here, humans could seemingly travel to other parts of the outer space. During that same lecture, he added that Mars would be “the obvious next target.”

Last year, Hawking stated that a disaster capable of wiping out the human race was a “near certainty.” He told attendees at the Oxford University Union that,

“Although the chance of disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years.”

Hawking added that he expected humans to have developed space travel by that time, so there would be some survivors on other planets.

Stephen Hawking’s gloomy prediction of planetary destruction may seem incredible on the face of it, but it might not be as far-fetched or unbelievable as it sounds. Consider: if you were to flip a coin ten times, you would probably not get “heads” five times in a row.

Flip it a thousand times, and a sequence of “heads” becomes a lot more likely. Similarly, the odds of a planetary catastrophe happening during a particular year are remote. It could very well happen within the century, however.

Dwayne Johnson Died this Week or Not

January 19, 2016 By Jason Leathers 3 Comments

"Dwayne Johnson not dead"

The Rock has been the victim of a social media hoax

This year started with the announcements of many deaths and social media spreads the news: even Dwayne Johnson died this week or not…

This year kicked off in a rather gloomy way as news of many celebrities deaths have made us all sad. Among the ones who passed away are Glenn Frey from The Eagles, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Natalie Cole and others.

The news, although spread by mass-media, reaches people all over the world a lot faster through social media pages such as Facebook or Twitter. There are many fan pages on Facebook that follow different artists and post news about them. So, it was only natural that these past few days Facebook and Twitter pages were filled with R.I.P messages and condolences.

But some people take this over the edge by pranking other social media fellows into thinking that some of their favorite celebrities are dead. One such hoax happened recently when a Facebook fan page called “R.I.P. Dwayne Johnson” has tricked people into believing the actor is dead and asked for comments and likes. They immediately attracted attention and fans started pouring likes and comments in which they expressed their sadness about the news. Of course from Facebook, the sad news transferred to Twitter where a long list of condolences started.

On the other hand, there have been some skeptical fans who did not believe the news pointing out that mass-media has not made the news public and therefore this must be a fake report. Of course, the news has reached the actor himself and his representatives have officially confirmed that he is alive and well.

He hasn’t been the only victim of the hoax. Other celebrities were reported to be dead by people on social media. Although the first pranks might have been funny, fans are starting to get angry, saying that these fake reports need to stop as they are very hurtful to people who care about a certain celebrity.

On the other hand, this type of “advertising” can also show how popular a certain person is by following the numbers of likes and comments about his or her death. However, the practice is quite creepy to say the least and we hope the hoaxes will soon stop as hearing about so many deaths is getting very depressing.

There Are At Least Three More Seasons of Game of Thrones To Go

July 31, 2015 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

The mystery of Jon Snow's death remains unresolved

The mystery of Jon Snow’s death remains unresolved

HBO’s programming executive Michael Lombardo has announced that there are at least three more seasons of Game of Thrones to go, but that they are clearly open for more than that, even if that entails building on a prequel.

Game of Thrones fans are extremely excited to hear that the show is definitely running for at least three more seasons, because that secures quite a fair share of Westeros adventures for them to get their fantasy fix from for the next few years. However, considering the magnitude of the all the stories that are intertwined in the Game of Thrones world, the idea of only three more seasons remaining seems oddly abrupt, as there is still a lot that the characters are expected to go through.

Lombardo did say that they are willing to keep it going further than season 8, but that it all depends on the show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. They are the ones who decide just how much of Westeros we’re going to be seeing in the future. He also said that their main focus at the moment is season 6 though, that is currently being filmed and that will air next year.

Another extremely interesting path that the show might be taking after season 8 is a prequel, which has immense potential, because there is a massive amount of material from the books that the creators could base it on. Furthermore, the question that immediately came to the fan’s minds upon hearing this plan was obviously whether or not Ned Stark would be coming back, as his death was the first tremendously shocking scene that fans witnessed on the show, that seems almost impossible up to this day, given the fact that Ned was such a beloved character.

But there is one other shocking death that the fans seem to be incapable of accepting and that is the alleged death of Jon Snow. There are numerous theories regarding the character’s resurrection that are still booming on the internet, a month and a half after one of the bloodiest and the most shocking season finales in HBO history. People simply cannot accept that Jon Snow may not be coming back.

Kit Harrington has been grilled on the subject ever since and he has been stalked and analyzed by the press, all in the hope of solving this Jon Snow mystery. Despite the fact that both Michael Lombardo and Harrington himself have clearly explained that Snow is dead, most fans still don’t believe it, since Harrington has kept his Jon Snow hair and beard, which he is allegedly eager to get rid of, and he is currently in Belfast, along with the cast and crew of Game of Thrones.

Whether Kit Harrington might be filming Jon’s Snow funeral or his resurrection, it remains to be seen in season 6, which is by far the most anticipated TV series return of 2016. Michael Lombardo still claims that Snow is “Dead is dead is dead is dead. He be dead”, but what the fans seem to be hearing is that he is indeed dead, but that he might be coming back as whitewalker (which would technically mean that he would be as dead as dead can be), or that he is dead at the beginning of the season, but that he will be resurrected by literally anybody who could do that. But unfortunately, it looks like the fans still have to wait until next year to find out, because the Game of Thrones people are not spilling anything.

At this point, there are three more characters whose death could spark such a massive worldwide outrage: Aria Stark and Daenerys Targaryen, but most of all, Tyrion Lanister, whose death would be one of the most tragic events in all TV history, considering only the immense fan base the character has gathered on his own.

Therefore, it’s an encouraging thought that there are three seasons still left to go and hopefully HBO will figure out a way to convince David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to go even further than that, because Game of Thrones is a true phenomenon in the TV series world, as fans can’t seem to get enough of it.

Homelessness Soars in L.A., Officials Pledge to House Everybody by 2016

May 12, 2015 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

Homelessness Soars in L.A., Officials Pledge to House Everybody by 2016

According to a report released Monday, homelessness in L.A. City and across the county jumped 12 percent since 2013 mainly because of an unfortunate mix of lack of employment opportunities, high housing costs and low wages.

The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority reported this week that homeless population in LA County counted 44,359 people early this year which is higher than the figures for 2013 when there were about 39,400 homeless people countywide.

But 25,686 of the 44,359 homeless were reported in L.A. City alone. Statistics show, however, that homeless population dropped 6 percent countywide. Yet the situation remains critical within the city’s limits.

City officials pledged that they would provide every homeless people with a place to live by the end of the year. Currently, L.A. homeless dwell in tents, abandoned vehicles, or improvised encampments. Authorities report that the number of such “homes” jumped 85 percent over the past two years, so it is increasingly harder to ignore them.

“It’s everywhere now; the encampments are in residential neighborhoods, they’re outside of schools,”

said a spokesperson for the L.A. city hall.

But groups that try to tackle the issue put the blame on local authorities for failing to provide low-income people with affordable housing by repeatedly ignoring the problem. On the other hand, authorities claim that solving the problem requires a joint effort between the state, businesses, non-for-profits and philanthropic organizations.

Also, city officials noted that re-housing was not the only solution. Homeless people also need mental health counseling or help to get rid of their addictions that keep them isolated from the rest of the community.

Yet, the situation in L.A. is not singular. New York City also reported high levels of homelessness – about 60,000 of homeless people were reported this year. But NYC managed to tackle the problem in a more efficient way, so only one third of homeless people currently live on streets, while the vast majority is hosted in shelters.

In L.A., people living in tents, cars or other improvised shelters soared to more than 9,500, from about 5,300 in 2013. Another cause may be the lack of cheap hotel or motel rooms and apartments due to recent gentrification efforts.

Additionally, homelessness is not only a visual nuisance. It also implies a high crime rate as many people choose to enter shady businesses to survive or fuel their addictions.

Federal reports also show that homelessness soars in L.A. as the county faces the highest rate in the nation. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs nearly doubled funding to the county to tackle the problem. Federal funding was $105 million last year, and $82 million two years ago. LA City also deployed hundreds of home subsidies for people lacking a home that are not eligible for a VA program.

Yet homeless advocates claim that federal and local funding is aimed at helping only homeless veterans, while ignoring the newly homeless.

Moreover, L.A. City affordable housing crisis may also be linked to the cuts in the funding necessary for building new homes for homeless population. Seven years ago, the funding totaled $108 million, but six years later it plunged to less than $30 million.

FBI Releases National Report on Slain Police Officers, Figures are Alarming

FBI Releases National Report on Slain Police Officers, Figures are Alarming

A recent report released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation shows that the number of police officers killed in the line of duty over the course of the last year jumped by nearly 90 percent from a couple of years ago. Although the news looks alarming, investigators say that the figures are not above the annual average for the last 35 years.

In the FBI report, which was publicly released Monday, the agency disclosed that 51 police officers were “feloniously” terminated while serving community in 2014, which is an 89 percent increase from 27 officers killed two years ago.

The agency estimates that on an average about 64 officers faced death in job-related scenarios over three decades and a half. The recent report is consistent with the recent reports on police officers killed in the line of duty nationwide.

Additionally, the FBI report was released amid national unrest related to African Americans or members of the Latino community ruthlessly gunned down by law enforcement officers. It seems however, that there is a grim toll on both sides.

Regardless of the extended programs to train police officers and precautionary measures such as enhanced body armors, working as a police officer is still a risky job. For instance, a couple of weeks ago, thousands of New Yorkers attended NYPD Officer Brian Moore’s funeral. Moore was shot in the head in his patrol car in Queens by an armed suspect for no apparent reason.

Moore’s death was the third death of a NYPD police officer in less than six months.

Moreover, this weekend two Hattiesburg police officers were killed during a routine traffic stop. Two men and a woman were taken into custody. The suspects had multiple arrests on gun and drug trafficking charges.

But according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s statistics, being a police officer became increasingly safer over the course of years. The group learned that although more than 200 police officers were slain on a yearly basis during the 1970s and 1980s, since the turn of the 21st Century that number dropped below 200.

For 2014, the FBI report shows that 38 of the slain police officers were killed with guns – 32 with handguns, 11 with riffles and the rest with shotguns. Four others died when suspects used a car as a deadly weapon, while one officer died after being beaten to death.

Thirty-five of the 51 police officers killed last year wore body armor when they were slain, the report shows. FBI also reports that the most dangerous region to serve as a police officer is the South. Seventeen officers were killed in South over the course of last year, while fourteen were put to death in the West.

The South was revealed as a dangerous place for police officers in 2013 reports as well.

Additionally, police officers who tried to tackle disturbances were at the highest risk of being killed. About 11 of them died after having answered a call related to a disturbance. Ten law enforcement officers were killed while performing traffic stops or pursuits, according to the report.

New York Nuclear Plant Partially Shut Down due to Hudson Oil Slick

May 11, 2015 By Jason Leathers 2 Comments

New York Nuclear Plant Partially Shut Down due to Hudson Oil Slick

On Sunday, a transformer fire caused the partial shut down of a nuclear plant located 40 miles north of New York City and an oil spill into the Hudson River. New York state governor announced Sunday that emergency crews were struggling to contain the Hudson oil slick and clean it up as soon as possible.

The oil was used as transformer fluid at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, New York. Engineers roughly estimated that thousands of gallons of the fluid were discharged into Houston. However, the exact amount remains largely unknown, according to the governor.

Authorities reported that a transformer at the nuclear plant suddenly encountered a malfunction and caught fire, which led to an automatic shut-down of non-nuclear side of the facility.

However, emergency crews said that although they managed to quickly extinguish the fire, the resulting heat revived the blaze which was put out once more. But as a tank designed to hold transformer fuel failed to contain the extra amount of fluid, oil slowly leaked into Houston’s waters.

Officials from the state Department of Environmental Protection said that they had taken additional measures to prevent more leaks such as installing booms in the river. NYC authorities said Sunday that the clean up should not last longer than a couple of days.

Although the transformer moat failed to contain the thousands of gallons of leaked fluid, the main reactor was not affected. Engineers checked it and reported that there were no safety concerns as it remained stable. The secondary reactor of the plant was also out of the harm’s way and remained fully functional.

The Buchanan nuclear power plant, which is located on the eastern bank of the Houston River, provides electricity to millions of households, businesses and state buildings across Westchester County and in the Big Apple.

New York gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the incident was far from being a “major situation,” but nevertheless emergency teams took the situation very seriously.

“I take nothing lightly when it comes to this plant specifically,”

he added.

The transformer involved in the blaze had the purpose of changing the voltage of the energy generated by the plant to match the power grids in the state. The blaze was extinguished by the staff in the facility and an automatic sprinkler system. Moreover, fire crews and police officers were also called as a precaution.

Crews couldn’t tell on-spot what was the exact cause of the transformer failure or whether it could be repaired. But they reassured the public that there were no safety risks or a health hazard involved. Entergy employees are currently investigating the root of the problem.

Cuomo, on the other hand, complained that there were far too more emergencies at the Indian Point Energy Center. Its Unit 3 had to be shut down Thursday because of a water leak located in the similar area where the fire broke out. Officials said then that the problem was solved and there was no radioactive hazard. Additionally, two months ago, Unit 3 was again shut down for a refueling that took way longer than expected.

Obama Draws Heat from Democrats over Asia Trade Deal

May 9, 2015 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Obama Draws Heat from Democrats over Asia Trade Deal

During a speech delivered at Nike’s headquarters Friday, President Obama expressed his discontent with his own party colleagues’ stance on Asia trade deal he was currently trying to negotiate. He said that the Democrats who opposed it were “just wrong” and “making stuff up.”

The President also explained that if negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership fail, its critics would only manage to “pull up the bridge and build a moat” around themselves.

He also told the crowd of 2,100 Nike workers that his fellow Democrats, whom he called “his friends,” were like “whupping” on him when talking about the Asia trade deal, although they agree with him on various issues from minimum wage to carbon dioxide reduction.

The chief of the state complained that “his friends” suspected him that there was a political stake in supporting a freer trade with the East, although he ran his last election. He also disclosed that the only reason he was lobbying for the agreement was the well-being of the U.S. workers and the nation’s economy.

“[…] on this issue, on trade, I actually think some of my dearest friends are wrong. They’re just wrong,”

he added.

The Nike speech is the second public attempt of President Obama to push for the Asia trade deal since he requested from Congress fast-track authority, or extended negotiating authority on trade deals.

But he clearly lacks support from his fellow Democrats. So, he currently works on gaining their trust. And the visit at Nike’s headquarters was a move into that direction. Obama agreed with Nike that if the Asia trade deal was approved, the company would create nearly 10,000 jobs on U.S. soil.

Although the head of the state didn’t mention their names, he presumably was referring to Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Harry M. Reid, two top Democrats that are currently trying to block the trade deal negotiations by all means necessary. Reid even said recently that he was so upset with President Obama’s political speech that he was ready to make even more efforts to block his long-sought authority on trade deal negotiation.

Other members of the party were also disturbed with Mr. Obama’s words. Rep. Rosa DeLauro said that the President was wrong for telling Democrats they were wrong or were making things up. She called such assumptions “throwaway lines” meant to “denigrate” congressional members.

Rep. Louise Slaughter argued that she and her colleagues were against a new trade deal because of the bitter experience they had with President Clinton’s North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the trade deals that followed. She also said that she would forgive Mr. Obama for his incisive speech since he doesn’t seem to grasp the larger picture.

On the other hand, she criticized him for switching his stance on trade deals since he launched his first presidential bid. Back then, he allied with trade agreement critics and promised a renegotiation of NAFTA for being “so bad.”

But in Mr. Obama’s case history seems to repeat itself. Eight years ago, President Bush delivered a similar speech nine months before his tenure was over. The topic of the discussion was immigration reform, which Democrats opposed. In the end, any negotiations with his critics collapsed.

Florida Governor Changes Stance on Obamacare Once More, Budget on Hold

May 9, 2015 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

Florida Governor Changes Stance on Obamacare Once More, Budget on Hold

Currently, Florida governor Rick Scott has second thoughts on Obamacare and Medicaid expansion, after a change of heart two years ago when he suddenly switched from a fierce opponent to an enthusiastic supporter shortly after his mother’s death.

Back then, he even went live on TV to tell his voters that he has changed his mind on President Obama’s health care reform. He also said that he would no longer deprive “in good conscience” nearly 1 million citizens of vital health care coverage by opposing expansion.

The announcement was a big surprise both for his fellow Republicans and his electorate since Floridians’ trusted Scott enough to elect him governor mainly because he made his political debut by running TV ads which bashed Obamacare.

Subsequently, many people including his longtime supporters thought that he changed his mind on Medicaid expansion because he wanted to draw Obama administration’s support for his plans to hand over Medicaid enrollees’ health care coverage to private insurers.

But Florida governor replied then that his sudden change of heart was linked to his mother death and Obama administration’s approval for his long-term plan to allow private insurers to take care of the Medicaid health care of more than three million people.

But this year, the governor changed his stance once more. He recently started to harshly criticize Obama’s health care reform and the President ambitions to expand Medicaid even more. He even sued the federal government a couple of weeks ago for White House’s pressures on him to consider as eligible for Medicaid coverage people that do not qualify as the working poor. He also said that taxpayers will suffer the most.

Although Florida performs much better financially than it did two years ago, gov. Scott doesn’t want an expansion. Under the current regulations, Florida covers about 40 percent of the Medicaid expenses, while the federal government covers 60 percent. If the expansion occurs, government would cover those expenses entirely at first, and 90 percent later.

On Friday, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz harshly criticized Scott for deceitfully trying to privatize Medicaid while pretending that he was a strong supporter of the expansion. She also said that she was at a loss for words when she saw the Florida governor’s “true colors.”

But Medicaid expansion debate has broader consequences besides Scott’s lack of credibility due to his lack of consistency. Last week, Florida lawmakers failed to pass a budget due to the controversy. Senators who tried to cater to hospital and insurers’ interests came at odds with Scott and conservatives in the House who rejected the measure.

Florida budget, which has a yawning hole, needs to be passed by July 1. Moreover, a federal grant which covers hospital care for poor patients nears its expiration date, unless lawmakers can strike a deal with federal government by June 30.

But Thursday, Gov. Scott failed to persuade Obama administration to extend the $1 billion grant without a Medicaid expansion. On that day, a reporter asked Scott whether he changed his stance on Medicaid expansion in the last couple of years because of an election.

“Let’s remember what I said back then. It was the day that we were able to get our waivers done,”

the governor replied.
