Apple Watch is definitely an iPhone accessory no matter how hard some people may want it not to. Its basic functions such as making a phone call, texting, searching for new information, and even gaming cannot exist without having an iPhone around.
In order to get access to those functions you’ll need your iPhone on, an Internet service, and an active connection between your watch and the iPhone via either Bluetooth or a Wi-Fi network. These are the basics every Apple Watch wanna-be owner should learn before even thinking about purchasing the gadget.
You need also to know that the watch requires iPhone 5 or a more recent version.
However, there are a handful of things Apple Watch can do without an iPhone. It can, for instance, play your favorite music. The tiny wearable has a 6.2 GB storage space which you can stuff with your favorite tracks.
After you have synced your favorite music with help from your iPhone and Apple Watch app, you are good to go. Yet, the music needs to be on your iPhone or in the iTunes. After the syncing work is done, you’ll only need a pair of Bluetooth headphones to listen to music. You must also open the Apple Watch Music app where you need to Force Press and set as source Apple Watch. You’ll notice that you’ll have access to music just like on an iPod.
Additionally, Apple Watch can run its two fitness apps, dubbed Workout and Activity without having your iPhone around. These apps can also help you keep track on your heart rate. “Activity” records how many steps you made, how long you stood or performed active exercise. “Workout” can time exercise sessions and measure distance, pace, heart rate and estimate calorie burn for a wide range of activities.
But you cannot GPS track your run or walk away from your iPhone. Also, you cannot use third-party fitness apps without your phone. In fact, any third-party app, which was not designed by Apple, needs your iPhone to be paired with the smartwatch to work.
Moreover, you can use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch without an iPhone. You just need to set up a valid credit card first to be ready to pay with a few taps on your watch’s face at any store that supports the payment method. Yet, the method is so convenient that can seriously get you addicted. Whenever you want to cancel Apple Pay on you watch, use your iPhone and deactivate the feature. That works even if the watch is not Internet-connected at that moment.
You can also watch up to 500 photos on your Apple Watch without an attached iPhone. You only need to download your photos from your iCloud or phone. But there is an inconvenience as the screen is too tiny. Yet,the feature does work without your iPhone’s help and it looks pretty cool.
Furthermore, you can use your Apple Watch as a watch, timer or alarm clock even if your phone is off or offline. You can also use Apple’s eye-candy watch faces which will still tell time when your iPhone is not close by.
Also, you can read missed phone calls on your Apple watch, read text messages and even listen to voice mails even if your iPhone is not around. Voice mails usually will play back on the watch even if your phone has an Airplane status. However, you won’t be able to make a call without your iPhone or send new messages.
