According to the recent reports revealed, this year 5 mathematicians got ‘Breakthrough Prize’ and each mastermind gets $3 million for their contribution in making lives better. Last year, Facebook and Google (Silicon Valley giants) created the ‘Breakthrough Prize’ award.
The breakthrough award intends to acknowledge researchers as well as their effort similar to the way artists and sports athletes are recognized and granted. The $3 million cash prize is 3 times greater than the prize money received by the winners of the Nobel Prize. As per the award body, for the coming year and also the approaching years, just one award will go to a mathematician.
“The life sciences laureates made some stunning inventions this year, from the new type of gene to some Parkinson’s treatment which has enhanced the lives of many; it’s energizing to stay in the organization of these radiant and fertile minds,” Anne Wojcicki, among the founders of the prize and biotechnology entrepreneur stated.
The recent award ceremony awarded 12 researchers $3 million each as their work achievements. Amongst the person receiving this breakthrough prize were Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for genetic regulation and Louis Benabid for his efforts in creating a strategy for Parkinson’s disease treatment. C. David Allis, the Rockefeller College won for his discovery of histone proteins and it’s potential role in leading to illnesses for example cancer.
Maxim Kontsevich, in the mathematics category received the breakthrough prize for his contributions in a variety of mathematical disciplines varying from geometry to homological algebra. Another math expert, Simon Donaldson was famous for his 4-dimensional manifolds. With this year’s breakthrough award, as many as $36 million was handed to top researchers all over the globe to make the Earth a much better place. Seth McFarlane,Family Guy creator, hosted the award ceremony. It had been held at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.
