Helping Drug Addicts Is Now A Political Priority

February 10, 2016 By Brian Galloway Leave a Comment

More Americans die from drug overdoses now than from car crashes.

More Americans die from drug overdoses now than from car crashes.

Recent news inform us that helping drug addicts is now a political priority.

The so-called ‘use of drugs’, as we know it, is one of the biggest problems our society confronts nowadays. Heroin is a highly addictive, illegal drug. It is used by millions of addicts around the world who are unable to overcome the urge to continue taking this drug every day of their lives.

It is clear that a person dealing with addiction needs the help and support of family members and friends. It takes an understanding support system to deal with the ongoing challenges. Nationwide, about 2.2 million people need treatment for opioid abuse, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, but about only 1 million manage to get it.

To help make that happen, the federal government is looking to increase funding for heroin addiction programs. The Obama administration is proposing a significant boost in federal spending to battle the nation’s heroin addiction epidemic. They will seek a $1 billion increase in spending over two years to expand access to treatment. The administration will spend about $127 million on such treatment programs this year.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers has also proposed legislation focused on authorizing grants to expand local treatment and recovery programs to dispose of excess painkillers. Florida Republican, Marco Rubio just signed on to co-sponsor the legislation, on the eve of the New Hampshire primary:

This bill will improve treatment options, increase prevention efforts, and help law enforcement fight drug abuse.

he stated in a declaration.

New Hampshire is a state that has been particularly ravaged by drugs. It has one of the highest rates of fatal opioid overdoses in the country. That means a lot of voters in New Hampshire want to talk about drug addiction. They want to know what the men and women running for president can do to help. They want to know what those in Congress can do about it and for good reason.

Another recent graph representation shows that more Americans die from drug overdoses now than from car crashes. In 2014, that was about 47,000 people. Most of these people took opioid painkillers prescribed by a doctor; many others died from heroin, the cheaper alternative.

Now, returning to the political report, one could easily say that the Obama administration and Congress are acting more because it’s politically expedient than because it’s the right thing to do for millions of Americans.

Even if it were true, it wouldn’t matter. More help and treatment services need to be made available for all the drug addicts and this proposal is a good step in that direction.

Brain Roberts, Comcast CEO Seems to be Agreeing with Obama On Net Neutrality

November 14, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Brain-Roberts-agrees-with-Obama's-on-net neutrality

Brian Roberts, Comcast CEO seems to be agreeing with Obama on ‘Net Neutrality’. “For me, the debate over net neutrality is also a debate over semantics,’ he said.

“My telecommunications company concurs in principal with Obama’s call for protecting internet neutrality, which obviously would bar service provider companies from giving privileged treatment to the selected companies,” Roberts stated Wednesday.

Moreover, he stated that he completely disagrees with the way Obama wants to enforce the rules.

Also, in a news conference held at San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum, Roberts persisted his conglomerate is a booster of the internet neutrality – even though Comcast has already been charging companies such as online video streaming service Netflix to make certain its customers receive reliable service – despite accusations that it’s acting deceitfully.

We strongly disagree with the allegation,” he added.

The event was hosted by Comcast Ventures — the venture capital arm of the Philadelphia company that runs the country’s largest cable system and the entertainment giant NBCUniversal.

Roberts appeared on media just 2 days after Obama generate a grapple with large telecommunications conglomerates like Comcast and also the soon-to-be Republican-brought Congress by suggesting that internet broadband companies be controlled as public utilities, under Title II of the federal Telecommunications Act.

American President also asked to ban on paid access to faster use. That may prevent deals like the agreement, Comcast arrived at with Los Gatos’ Netflix.

Way back in Feb, Netflix decided to pay Comcast to make sure that its customers received faster, more reliable service when they had broadband through Comcast. The 2 companies later bickered over who triggered the degraded service Netflix reported late past year.

On Monday, Comcast immediately responded to the Obama’s speech by saying the organization supports an open Internet, however, that another part of the Telecommunications Act that imposes a “light touch” on rules. Comcast experts noted that the organization was following internet neutrality rules enforced by government bodies once it merged with NBCUniversal.

The Federal Communications Commission — government regulators are focusing on drafting new internet neutrality rules.

Though, Roberts didn’t directly criticize Obama’s decision to consider a powerful get up on internet neutrality now, but was opposed on the intricacies about how exactly large telecom companies is going to be controlled. He stated Comcast is “comfortable” that the government and also the telecom industry can forge a contract finally.

“What we shouldn’t do is somehow have price regulations in a business that’s competitive,” Roberts said.

On Wednesday, AT&T responded to Obama’s stance by saying it might stop investing in the intends to build high-speed fiber-optic broadband systems in approximately 100 cities of United States before the internet neutrality debate is settled.

But Roberts clarifies that Comcast hasn’t made any plans to lessen its capital investments considering the restored debate.

Also, he stated he doesn’t think the controversy will affect Comcast’s suggested purchase of Time Warner Cable, though Obama’s speech sent stock values for both companies down.

In the press event, Comcast revealed a voice-activated TV remote remote control as well as an audio-enabled programming guide to assist the aesthetically impaired.

GOP Continues Pursuit Of Obama Over Middle East

September 13, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee 1 Comment

GOP-Continues-Pursuit-Of-Obama-Over-Middle-East

As if things weren’t bad enough for the White House regarding the new threat of war in the Middle East, the GOP continues to badger the President over what his plans are regarding the Islamic State militants.

The problems are that the GOP has been gnawing at the White House regarding the exact plans Obama has to handle the threat. The US, now tired of constant war and failing miserably at recovering from its own collapsing infrastructure is being worn down by no concrete data from the White House regarding the issue. Senate Democrats are worried that any decisions or actions will jeopardize their hold in the upcoming elections and a failure at this time by Obama could wipe out any chance of Democratic supremacy come Autumn.

Both sides are cautious regarding making so many definitive statements as any foul ups could jeopardize either side. The GOP is hoping the White House will foul up and give them easy victories and the Democrats are hoping the White House can fend off Republican attacks, growing public disapproval, and any military mistakes before election time or the Democratic hold on the Senate will be sunk.

Obama’s present strategies seem to be working with air strikes and arming Syrian rebels with major gains against ISIS in Iraq. Republicans are cautious not to be too critical but Obama’s reluctance to send in armed troops has so far proven effective. Americans want no more war and casualties and definitely don’t want to spend more money on the Middle East conflicts as poverty is running rampant with little or no hope for future recovery as long as they’re involved in Middle East conflicts.

That being said, as time grows short, more members of both political parties will have to make more stronger stances on their viewpoints and positions as the crisis continues. By the time of the November elections there will be a clear cut look ahead at victory and a stronger support of Democrats or a prolonged and drawn out series of conflicts that won’t do well for the Democrats.
