Report Reveals; Amgen’s Ovarian cancer trial failed badly

November 5, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee Leave a Comment

Amgen trial failed

A recent report revealed that trebananib failed to improve the health of the patients who suffers from ovarian cancer. Trebanaib is the last phase medicine for the cure of ovarian cancer patients.

Recently, experts performed a trial on a patient in order to check the performance of this new drug. Unfortunately, the result demonstrated that the patient merely lived a month longer than the expectations of doctors. It signifies that the drug is not that much effective for the cancer patients.

Earlier, a study revealed that every year ovarian cancer takes lives of around 14,000 women in the United States. Moreover, it stated that the ordinary cancer patients survive 18.3 months on their last stage. However, this drug increased the rate merely up to 19.3 months.

Therefore, the drug was unable to fulfill the chief objective of experts. Earlier, the U.S based firm was pretty confident regarding the performance of this drug.

A year ago they carried out an experiment in order to determine the exact performance of this new drug. Fortunately, the drug showed a significant improvement in the health of cancer patients. It lessens the development of the deadly disease to a great extent.

Shortly after this positive outcome of the experiment the specialists performed another trial. Unfortunately, this time the experiment failed badly which fueled up the arguments and discussion regarding this drug.

Sean E.Harper, the vice president of Amgen stated that presently experts are trying to determine the affect of this drug on several other types of cancer.

New Crash Test Dummies to Represent OverWeight Americans

New Models of Car Crash Dummies

Humanetics compels Crash Test Dummies to gain weigh in order to look like obese Americans. The Michigan based company believes that these kinds of dummies will more appropriately represent the huge Americans.

Humanetics has been producing car crash dummies since a long time. Unfortunately, the company has not modified the model of these dummies since 1950s.  It seems like now the firm is all set to redesign the entire prototype of car crash dummies.

The company took the decision of revamping shortly after the release of a survey report. A recent researcher unveils that nearly 80 percent of American drivers are overweight.

Earlier, producers used to make dummies of around 168 pounds along with a perfect BMI. The older air bags, seat belts and other security features were not suitable for overweight people.

Nonetheless, the new dummies would be sculpted approximately 275 pounds with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 35. According to the report of Center of Disease Control and Prevention, the 35 BMI is considered as an obesity disease in humans.

Chris O Conner, CEO of Humantics informed that almost 78 people who suffered from obesity died in car crash. Therefore, they designed dummies of middle range which would be extremely different from the conventional seat.

The experts of Erie Medical Center examine the data of car crashes of the United States in 2010. The study uncovers that more than 150,000 drivers who faced car crashes were relatively fat.

Study Reveals; Extinction of Megalodon Shark Paved the Way for Whales

October 27, 2014 By Rebecca McGhee 1 Comment

Megalodon

The annihilation of Megalodon (60 foot long shark) is  the chief reason behind the transformation in the size of whales.

Lately, researchers revealed that that Megalodon sharks helped the whales to grow in size. Megalodon is considered as the world’s  largest shark,  which wiped out from Earth nearly 1.8 million years ago. Even a single tooth of the ancient shark was approximately seven inches.  Surprisingly, these sharks died out at the time of the appearance of the modern whales.

Afterwards, whales became the largest animal of the world. They are even larger in terms of size than the dinosaur

The Expers of University of Florida and University of Zurich struggled to find out the cause behind the extinction of sharks. They examined the data of 42 latest remnants in specially for this purpose. They accumulated the entire data from an online source of the fossils of ancient animals known as Paleobiology Database.

Moreover, they utilized the Optical Linear Estimation to discover the exact death date of that animal.

In the end the study revealed a significant information regarding the extinction of the top underwater predator.  It disclosed that the Megalodon disappeared, probably 2.6 million years ago from this world. It was the era of Pliocene and Pleistocene when the whales turned into an enormous species.

Furthermore, researchers stated that the timings are a big evidence since marine mammals were the only source of their food.

The study is printed in the journal Plos One.
