Instagram Decides To Double Down On Security

February 17, 2016 By Chen Lai Leave a Comment

Instagram adds a second lock to its doors with two-factor authentication.

As the popularity of the giant company continues to grow, Instagram decides to double down on security with two-factor authentication. This initiative is meant to help prevent security breaches and will serve to reassure Instagram’s 400 million users, including celebrities and brands.

If you’re an active social-media user, you can’t deny the phenomenon of Instagram. Over the past few years, it has become one of the most dominant social network. According to some studies, 23% of American teenagers’ responses to the question ‘What’s your favorite social network?’ correspond to ‘Instagram’.

However, up to this point, logging into Instagram only required a user ID and password. TechCrunch is reporting that soon users will be able to opt for a temporary code to be texted to them, as a second step in the login process.

For those of you who are particular about their Instagram account’s security, then this is a feature you’ll want to check out.

Essentially, the two-step verification works like it does on any other platform. Once you activate it, Instagram will send a verification code to a phone number and once you put the code in, you’ll be able to access the account.  This will ensure that should someone get access to your password and email ID for Instagram, they won’t be able to log in.

Moreover, this initiative is a long belated move by the service, which has become the photo sharing service of choice for many celebrities. Last year, Taylor Swift was the victim of a hack, where a user took over her account and posted several pictures that were later deleted when her team regained control of it. Without two-factor, they only had to change her password on Instagram.

Presently, the site lacks any firm security feature. Similar to Facebook, one cannot access others’ photos if the account is private. Also, Instagram doesn’t let anyone download the images. The service has been adopted by many major companies including Google, Facebook, and Twitter.

Athough the update hasn’t rolled out quite yet,  we should keep an eye out for app updates. In the meantime, we can make sure that our backup email address and every other account we own is two-factored to the hilt.

That being said, the new measure is expected to be greeted with much enthusiasm by users of the picture based, social networking platform. Hopefully, the two-step verification feature will roll out to more users soon.

Twitter Is Introducing A New GIF Button On Its Mobile App

February 5, 2016 By Chen Lai Leave a Comment

'Bring on the GIF button, Twitter!' say the fans.

‘Bring on the GIF button, Twitter!’ – say the fans.

Pssst! Rumor has it, Twitter is introducing a new GIF button on its mobile app. The company wants its users to share more GIFs and the microblogging platform is testing a dedicated GIF button on mobile.

As you may very well know, Twitter is one of the most popular social networking services online. According to the most recent research, the company has more than 320 monthly users.

Did you know that Twitter is more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol? Or that a day’s worth of Twitter posts would fill a 10-million-page book? Or that Twitter’s bird has a name and it’s actually called Larry? These are just a few curious facts.

The actual news is that Twitter has begun testing a new feature for fans of reaction GIFs. Some users have spotted a dedicated GIF button in their Android apps, positioned right in the middle of the camera and poll icons.

Bank of the Ozarks Director of Marketing, Phil Pearlman, was able to test it out for TechCrunch and discovered that the new button is a portal to a selection of trending GIFs, including some categorized by mood and others that were trending.

As you can see in the tweet below, the dedicated GIF feature can be found in the ‘compose tweet’ screen, sitting in between the camera and poll icons.

A lot of people, including Pearlman, only had access to the button for a short while, though – it disappeared from their apps as quickly as it came.

Twitter hasn’t issued any official statement on the tests, but responded to a request for comment from TechCrunch‘s Jon Russell with the following GIF:

GIFs are gaining quite a lot of popularity in social media. In June 2014, Twitter announced that users can share and view animated GIFs online as well as on mobile. Some other social networking services such as Tumblr and Pinterest also support GIFs. GIFs have more of a fun and entertainment value.

However, GIFs also potentially holds commercial value for companies to promote their brands and products. For example, instant messenger app Kik, which has more than 275 million registered users across the world, has announced the launch of branded GIFs on its platform. Branded GIFs will allow companies to promote their brands on the chat app for a charge.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Twitter is adding the dedicated GIF button only for fun or also to increase revenue.

Facebook’s Photo Magic Makes Your Holidays More Colorful

December 19, 2015 By Jason Leathers Leave a Comment

Facebook’s Photo Magic makes your holidays more colorful, after the social network has created new functions for sharing images between its numerous users. In Messenger, once the users take an image of their friends, if they want to, the social network will help them deliver it instantly.

They will not have to wait until everyone has their own copy of that photo. The Photo Magic can help people to post the images without failing to remember someone in the group photo. Also, there are certain situations when users want to send pictures privately, so this option makes it simple and easy to complete the task, while still managing all files from just one place.

Users have to start their Messenger app and activate the Photo Magic function, which can be done via the application’s configurations. Once they take a picture, they will have the choice to “Send” the image to all people that Facebook identifies in the photo.

If they want to maintain a private post, just for themselves, it is enough to press the “cancel” choice instead. Even if this is possibly the most important modification that the company is adding to its Messenger app, it is likely that this will not be the only improvement.

Facebook is including a whole lot of new styles and emoji in the spirit of the upcoming holidays. For people who are on the iOS platform, they just have to select the users’ names above an online discussion to modify the group theme to a joyful red or change their relatives’ names to “Mom” and “Dad”.

The new emoji symbols in the holiday group will surely bring many thumbs up from other members if you post something more appropriate for this period, like party hats or tiny Santa icons to light up the mood.

Anyone in these discussions can transform the colors, names or emoji whenever they like, and when they make something different, people that are chatting with will notice the chosen up-dates. Of course, the platform has also thrown out a new snow animation within its Messenger app. When people send certain emoji to their friends, they will see little snowflakes appearing on their display.
